What does it take to convert a bike to a SS? I have an '00 Specialized Rockhopper that I was thinking of converting. I only have a single ring up front now with my MRP kit but what do I need to do to the rear wheel?

Hee hee, this is great.

I'm trying these:

I'm supposed to get my parts today. I'll let you know how it goes hopefully tomorrow.

Going to go with a pair of candys I have laying around.
I have flats on there now as it was a play around bike but I'll probably put some new pedals on my heckler and move those over to the rockhopper.

i've been researching this for awhile (shocking, huh?) and what i've come up with is in this thread:

http://forums.mtbr.com/showthread.php?t=208222&highlight=conversion

i'll either piece one together or buy a kit. i'm not sure yet. misfit makes a good kit as well as the one from bikeman.com...but i'm still not sure what the $60 price difference is all about. one thing i do know is, if all of you start putting these together now, i'm gonna pull the trigger and do it. i figure between the new seat, handle bars and tires and kit, i'm probably looking at $350 in parts...cheaper if i don't go with some schwalbes, but i'm probably gonna splurge since i won't have a shock for some time.

ugh, looks like my headset needs to be replaced. :( I'll probably replace the headset in the heckler and move that one to the rockhopper.

I know its fun to peice shit together and make it work and all but for under 500 you can buy a Redline Monocog or a Khs solo one.

I found the monocog not too far away. these 2 bikes seem to be the starter SS bikes that most prefer

this was my plan 'til i walked into marty's today. i literally COULD NOT leave without buying that bike. thankfully the wife was fine with it. when i told her i bought a new bike she almost killed me b/c she knows i've been talking about buying a road bike and she knows how much they cost. her eyes were like !!!

There really isn't much that the bike needs to be honest so I'll probably do the headset and leave it as a 9psd for now.

Well it took me 3.5 hours to get things right but the bike is converted. Getting the chain tension right (or at least what I think is right) took the most time. Going to try it out at the Tourne tomorrow morning. Good luck to the other maiden ss'ers tomorrow!
