Chimney Rock Conditions

Freeze=good times!
Thaw=a muddy ass ride.
Get there before it climbs above 32* and you'll be fine, everything is open due to some outstanding tm efforts.

I rode Chimney Rock late-morning to early afternoon today. As the temps were below freezing the entire time (per weather.com), there wasn't much mud to speak of. Due to the melting and re-freezing of snow the past few days, though, there's a lot of ice covering the trails currently. This requires quite a bit of caution -- not a good day for posting a personal best on Strava! There are also places where thin sheets of ice are covering several inches of pooled water, which can cave in unexpectedly (or maybe not so unexpectedly).

So, if you ride and it's icy like it was today -- be careful!

1/12/13- Conditions are really not good & they will not improve until it gets cold enough to freeze. Please avoid riding here until it does freeze. Thanks.

Yellow at 4:30 today was frozen, fast, and mud free. The orange climb from Gilbride was a bit sloppy, but rideable without making ruts. I bet tomorrow real early might be ok on the rest of the trails. Later in the day, forget about it.

Stayed out of the stream? ;-) Heard that tree was removed, look good now?

The tree is still there, but a nice reroute around it has been made since my plunge into the icy depths.

The yellow climb is back, enjoy the pain.

looking to coming up with a couple friends. Too warm to refreeze for tomorrow morning, no? Either way looking good for frozen weekday ride. Is there some sort of new trail feature and I should wear my wetsuit?

Yeah, probably gonna be sloppy Sunday, even in the AM.
Tue & Thur should be nice and solid all day.

Was frozen and rolling nice Sunday. With the temp swing coming a thaw is eminent....I'm sure that wont stop a bunch of people from beating the hell out of the trails.

Good ride today. Frozen and slightly snowy. There was a light 1/2" covering and a a bit of ice laying underneath the snow, but virtually no mud.

The snow is nicely packed down. After I finish my loop on the xc skis, I'm gonna go get the mtb and come back. But I better hurry before it gets too warm!

What are the current conditions at the rock? Any group rides on Sunday?

Currently, trail conditions suck. The remaining snow is not packed down, and the ground underneath it is real wet. The weekend looks bad, it's just not going to get cold enough to freeze things up. Don't go, unless you enjoy rutting trails up, hike a biking, and averaging a bike speed of 2mph.
