Chigger season is upon us

Just a friendly reminder that we are now in chigger season. To those who have been there, they are nasty tiny buggers that will make you itch so bad you want to douse yourself in gasoline and strike a match. Spray down real hood with bug spray and it wouldn’t hurt to bring some alcohol wipes and wipe down your legs and feet before leaving the park.

Preaching to an experienced choir I know, but here's some more (overly simplified) info.

If you can see the tiny little buggers, it's likely nymph tics. Multiple passes w/ a lint roller will remove most of them. If you can feel them, but you're unable to see them, it's chiggers. Laying a rubbing alcohol soaked washcloth on their bites/burrows will end them, but it will still itch.

FWIW: I follow up w/ an: epsom salt bath; followed by a liberal slathering of Vaseline Intensive Care; and some Neosporin Pain Relief to numb the worst areas.

thanks for this warning, I was thinking i wanted to try and plan to ride down there soon with some of you all, but this has me thinking wait until the chiggers have gone - in the fall?

FAKE NEWS. Classic Allaire is NOT fine. I have the bites to prove it.
To be clear, chiggers and ticks do exist. However, the vast majority of classic Allaire trails are so wide, the chance of picking them up is slim to none. To decry the whole place as a no-go is a bit alarmist.

Agree, don't put your feet down in the hog bog tall grass and wipe down after ride and you'll probably be ok. Brisbane you will have bites before your ride is done. I have not been in Bris since April.

And gummies.

A key chigger-avoidance behavior is staying away from the tall grass, because that’s where the chiggers are waiting for you. Skip the trails that pass through grassy areas. When you stop and put a foot down, make sure you’re putting that foot down on the trail, away from any growth.

Seconding Mitch’s advice: I spray the tops of my feet and ankles before putting on my riding socks. I usually wipe down with rubbing alcohol post-ride/pre-shower.
