Boolean searches

Is there a way this can be enabled?

For example, I want to read about Geax AKA tires. I can't search AKA because the search term needs to be at least four characters.

If I search Geax AKA or "Geax AKA" or Geax AND AKA it always returns results from an OR search; I get threads that have just the word Geax or just the word AKA (well I threw in AKA just for arguments sake, since it never shows up because it's three characters. Pretend it was 4).

Another option would be to allow 3 character searches. Is this possible?

I know I can use google with the site:mtbnj.com option but the results are not as navigable as the forum search results.

Let me look into it. Dropping to 3 letters increases the size of the DB because then 3 letter words get indexed as well.

There should be an option somewhere for Boolean searches. I think it's disabled by default. Not sure about the vbulletin version required though.

I enabled it. Doesn't seem to work.

It doesn't work for my particular example, but try maxxis ignitor and you'll get that exact phrase only.

This improves overall searching so I think it's a good move. I'm cool with the 3 word thing due to database size, google will be good enough. But this isn't the first time I was looking for more exact searches, I think long term this is a nice improvement.

Works for me. Search letters increases (no quotes or anything else) and it only comes up with this thread.

Really? I get 186 matches, this thread being the second and Kev's blog being the first.

Are there different setting for users groups (general, mods, etc)? This is what I get

I get 186 for letters OR increases with my admin account. I get 161 with my "mortal" test account. Without the OR, I get just this thread.

The reason I get a different number between my admin and mortal account is that the mortal account search won't return results of non-publicly accessible forums on the site.

It looks to be possible to create a custom google search engine and integrate it into the site...someday I might have time and the energy to do so.

Yeah, it was a group setting. But I figured "registered users" would cover all of us.

Bananas.
