Anyway I wanted to pretend I work at HB and ride to work like @jimvreeland. Took me 1.5 hours to get like 2/3rds of the way there before I decided I'd rather live the peasant life. Gave them my 2 weeks on the spot, but I'm just going to bail and not even show up.

I'm already maxed out on bridge points. So here's some decommissioned military vehicles...

DYK it uses a Chevy V8 engine? I wonder if it's still in there.

This one might have a Cadillac engine. That or a Continental or diesel.

1 + 2pt bridge bonus = 3 pts total (thought i was going to get the dark bonus, but realized the time moved from 45 mins to 1 hour...ugh...)

this bridge is another conrail bridge that runs what locally i've heard called the "junk train"...this is where it crosses over the "zombie" portion of the metuchen edison greenway. you can see the groovy greenway grafitti in the top left of the pic with my bike. and there's the cornerstone that reads 1925 in top right. here's the bridge's site on bridgehunter

another factoid...a couple of years back, one of the local kids from JP Stevens fell off this bridge, was electrocuted, and nearly died....it hit our local community really hard (i coached his younger brother in little league)...this article has a great update on his recovery...https://www.mycentraljersey.com/story/news/2018/02/23/edison-teen-who-wasnt-expected-survive-electric-shock-and-30-foot-fall-has-purpose/363152002/

ok...one more bridge...this is the NJ Transit crossing at evergreen road in Edison, adjacent to Rte 27...

we used to call this bridge, and the couple of others in this area, the "hole in the wall"

back about 15 years ago when it was being replaced, one of my local buddies was on the iron working crew putting in those huge spans...so we took the kids over and they sat on top of the minivan as we watched them put one of those huge suckers in place...very cool stuff!

Ah, yes, follow the river flow and ye shall find the old bridges. Starting from upstream and working down, using a TL;DR format:

1. Landing Lane Bridge
  • Current Span built 1895
  • Crosses both the Mighty Raritan and the D&R Canal, and provides access to the D&R towpath (but not even Hitler wants to ride the towpath)
  • An earlier span at this site was ordered destroyed by George Washington as his troops retreated from the Redcoats across NJ in late fall 1776

2. NEC Raritan River Rail Bridge
  • Current bridge built 1903
  • Made up of 21 stone, closed-spandrel arches
  • Also spans River Rd. on one side of the river, and Rt. 18 on the other
  • Encased in concrete 1949
  • PicASSo-approved
IMG_1248.JPG

IMG_1246.JPG

3. Morris Goodkind Bridge
  • Completed 1929, named after its designer
  • Art Deco!! Open-spandrel arches carrying US1 over the Raritan River
  • Over 60,000 cars per day over it pre-pandemic
  • Overlooks Mary Ellis' grave, all these years
  • Morris' son Donnyboy designed the parallel bridge next to it, completed in 1974
  • Spooky AF underneath it at night by yourself

When trying to upload my ride from Garmin it just got deleted. I will leave the judgement up to you.

1.5 hrs + bridge = 3.5 pts

Long way to pick up produce for tonight’s Grain Bowl.

This is a bridge on Rt 33 downtown Hightstown over Rocky Brook. This is the original site of Hight Family Water Mill and Tavern.

The other bridge is a new Walkway Bridge.

Behind Rocky Brook Bridge you can see a pillar from old Pemberton and Hightstown Rail Road Bridge that was taken out of service in 1976

Rocky Brook Bridge was damaged and Walkway Bridge was destroyed during flood of 2011.

Unfortunately I had to work in “loong guy-land” this morning, but got the bonus of a rare chance to ride glacier ridge. One thing that I can appreciate after not riding there in years- really well marked trails, and one-way directional trails. Feels good to let it rip without worrying about plowing into someone coming the opposite way.

Started out as a great ride thought the D&L would be a sheet of ice it had a thin coat of snow on top
Whip and snap 4 were nice picked up a lot of dead fall sawed a few small things out Moosehead had about 6 trees down was able to move 2 the rest need power
Now my ride went to shiite
Hollenback was getting soft and snow was difficult but I went for it anyway looking for this old RR bridge

It's an old spur off the D&L couldn't find much history on it but there it is
Ride was just a slog from this point on very tiring hey but bonus I hope

Tons of bridges +2
5 points

Rode through Newark, which is a much higher adrenaline rush than Mountain Creek and then hit a ton of bridges, but I got my first bonus yesterday, so just 2 points.

Wanted to get a couple of the important bridges in Raritan (the other Raritan) posted up.

1st is the Basilone Bridge c. 2005 - Raritan is all about Gunnery Sergeant John Basilone. Serious hero status there.
The town holds a number of events during the year in his honor. Perhaps you saw The Pacific.
He was one of the Marines featured. Anywho, they dedicated this bridge in his name when there was a major re-route
of the traffic coming from the west side of Hillsborough through Raritan.
The Turnpike bridge over the Raritan in New Brunswick is also named in his honor.

Looking on the far left of this bridge is a tunnel which leads to the Nevius Street bridge built in 1886 and retired when the Basilone bridge was complete..
It holds status on the National Register of Historic Places, and connects paved and field-side paths in the Duke estate to Duke Island Park.
Very cool Bridge.

Today was flats Friday as I put flat pedals back on my bike. I have noticed my “form” deteriorating during bunny hops and I really want to learn to wheelie. I goofed off a bit with wheelie-ing and worked on some bunnyhopping technique. Not a speedy ride by any means but it was needed.
