Biking for Obama

Nice

There are some great stories in there.

I took a trip across the US in 99', but it was not for any political reason. (Just for fun:)) Thanks for sharing.

Looks like I'll have to start the "biking against socialism" across country ride so I can be as far from DC as possible on inauguration day. If any fellow republicans feel like following a fat guy on a full suspension mountain bike out to California let me know...

You'll probably need that full suspension bike with the way the Republican's have been letting our roads and infrastructure fall into disrepair...

Obama is a socialist, roads are maintained by your state, not the president. Funds can be allocated by the feds, but through congress which is controlled by Democrats.
We can expect a lot more of this when Obama is in office and it's much easier to get the time to do this by just quitting your job and holding your hand out.

Um, perhaps in theory, but the system has long failed and the states require a greater percentage of federal funding, from anything from interstate highway work to state roads, to some cases even county roads. People wine about higher gas taxes and don't want to pay tolls, so that's why the feds are going to have to continue to provide money.

And before whining some more lookup the definition of socialism. Obama is a capitalist, we'll call him a new capitalist since your system failed...

Back on topic, I can only imagine what a rewarding and accomplished feeling riding across country can be. Regardless of if it's for a political reason or another cause. Perhaps one day, but I doubt it at this point in my life.

If you want to blame the states for depending more and more on the feds, look no further.

Nothing is more rewarding than not being able to take care of yourself and depending on mom, I mean the president to do everything for you.

Start taking care of yourself and yours and stop asking others for help and handouts.
1/20/09 national quit your job day.

And Obama a Capitalist? Wow that's funny. The guy is a straight up Socialist, have you listened to a word the man has said?

No ones whining here. If you don't see how Obama pushes his socialist views you must be blinded by his sweet talk along with the majority of this country. It's fine, it's over, he has his chance to "change the world". Lets all hope it changes for the better, I know I am.

I'm pretty sure that California (majority) voted Obama. You might want to try Alabama.;)

As a former civil engineer, I have delt with MANY road projects. If you think there is ANY shortage of money going to the construction of roads, you are not seeing what is being spent. The amount of money and flat out utter WASTE that goes on with road projects is staggering! I know state dump truck drivers making 100k a year! Anyone ever look at the snowplowing budget? Or perhaps notice how there are 17 dumptrucks in a line plowing clear pavement? The amount of money wasted every year due to the lack of accountability is just unreal. My company was the township engineers for Mt. Arlington, Clinton, Boonton, Green, hopewell, and a few others. Seeing how the dpw's were run blew my mind! Since there is no effort to keep what our government spends in check, my policy is to give them as little of my money to waste as possible.

Well as a current civil engineer, regardless of the unit costs of some items in a project, there simply is not enough money out there to do the number of projects required to the scope that is required. Besides it sounds like those drivers where taking GTluke's advise and taking care of themselves.

With small goverment the people get greedy and take, with large goverment the goverment gets greedy and takes. There's no perfect solution, but with Obama there's hope to pull this country out of the mess we've gotten ourselves into. Clearly I'm not the only who thinks this or else he wouldn't be about to become our President.

In the end, have fun, life's too short to be bitter. GTLuke, try to ride your epic 1500 miles this year, and UtahJoe, move back to Utah, the riding much better there!

Socialism??? We are far beyond that station my friends... I would love to join in on a cross-country ride. However, I have been unable to ride for over a week as a result of suffering from cluster headaches triggered by severe allergies but your government, in its infinite wisdom, cut me off from purchasing more decongestants at the pharmacy. I was not taking more than the recommended dosage but have been left to bum Zirtec and Sudafed pills from anyone I can find. Free country my ass!

well my former boss was the head of the DPW in Jefferson for years. He quit in protest because he was being forced to blow money on unneeded road projects. Repaving roads that were fine, spending money on BS so that the budget would never have to be smaller. The racket that was going on in Montague was the best though. They would force anyone who was building a house to pave the road in front of their lot. Fine, not a bad request. However, you had to do it, even if you lived on a road that was already paved. So if you had 600' of frontage, you had to pave 600' of road somewhere in montague, even if it wasnt on your street!! Totally illeagal! But who was going to stop them? People just wanted to get PB approval so nobody did anything about it. The money is there and there is plenty of it if anyone had any concern on how it was being spent.

Funny how that since the drop in gas prices we are hearing how there needs to be an increase in the fuel tax to compensate. I love that. The economy tanks and many of us have to be more mindfull of our budgets. Except for the government. They NEVER have to deal with less. They never have to worry about cutting back, or maybe paying attention to budgets. They simply do nothing and take more. Its never "maybe we should look into the cost of a road project and why the guy holding the stop/slow sign is making $25 an hour."

Im glad to see that you are so optimistic, good for you. I have heard from every poltician about stopping ear marks, and oversight, none ever follow through.

UtahJoe, move back to Utah, the riding much better there

Oh how I wish I could, hopefully someday.

Ghandi was a Murderer.
Obama is a Capitalist.
Jesus was a Muslim.

All three statements have the same validity.

In all seriousness, I can't believe we're coming full circle from Friedman to Keynes style economic thought. Spending our way out of a recession has never worked before.
