can't do anything right these days. i guess i shouldn't have thrown that bottle of TCE down the drain .

any advice on a good substitute?

pedros bio clean is good. Like $6 for 12oz, but it's not something you need to use liberally.

There are citrus based degreasers for car and home cleaning that should be more natural than SG

I'm a diehard White Lightning man myself. I haven't found anything that works better for me. My chain is never gunked up and the cassete stays pretty crud free too. The most important thing is to lube before EVERY ride. It only takes a minute so there's no excuse.
For washing bikes car wash soap or even dish detergent works pretty good. You should NEVER clean the bike with the jet washer at your local self serve car wash. You end up driving the crud deeper into bearings, pivots, & hubs.

Tony I would love to see that in writing, NIH and the msds arent listing it as carcinogenic.

I used to be a WL fan but discovered Squirt Long Lasting Dry Lube a few years ago while in South Africa (Cape Epic) and never went back. Fortunately it is now available in the US. I've been buying it by the case and sharing with friends the last 3 years. It works as well as WL but lasts much longer. I ride 12-16 hours/week and find I only need to re-apply once a week.

I use car wash and a big soft wallpaper brush to clean my bike. No pressure with the hose and dry everything with towels. Also found that baby bottle brushes are really good for getting into the odd spaces to clean.

Thanks for all the replies people! Can't believe my thread blew up like this. My LBS ended up having more than just the pedros stuff, so I grabbed the white lightening. We will see how that works for the ride tomorrow. See you all there!

entirely thrilled
i use a singlespeed to keep my bike clean.....

and when the chain starts making noises, i give it a week, figuring if it's not so bad it'll just shut up. if it's still making noises after a week, i apply whatever's handy to it. lubrease, finish line stuff, synthetic motor oil, whatever shuts it up.

you think i'm kidding but i'm not.
