8spd shifters

I have older 8spd Shimano shifters and was wondering if a 9spd Shimano derailleur would work?
I'm assuming it would right? right?

8spd chains are wider than 9spd chains, so it might not fit though the pulley cage.

I noticed it says derailleur is compatible with 8/9 speed, but does that mean 8/9 spd chains work? not sure.

I know you can use 9spd chains on an 8spd cassette though. So what's the advantage of 9spd. (pls don't say one more gear) ;)

Hopefully a shop wrench will chime in soon. :)

If it says 8/9 spd you should be good. The shifters are the brains since they dictate how much cable to pull.

You actually get 3 more gears!! Seriously, as time goes on, there is less and less higher quality stuff available for 8-speed. At this point the 8-speed is more durable debate has long been over, 9-speed is the way to go. If you still have any 8-speed stuff left, ride more to wear it out!!
