I went up there last year and rented all of their stuuf - 8" bikle and full kit. What a blast. I got chatting to a few of the chaps there but it woud be a lot better with a group that you know. You can stop after the tough stuff and chat:
"Did you see that, I got more than 10" off the ground!"
"I hurt in places I didn't think I had feelings"
"Man, I just cracked my nuts on the stem" etc, etc.

I'd be up for a group trip...

Group trips are the way to go. Last year we went up 3-4 times with a 10+ person NYCMTB crew on everything from 5" trailbikes to full-on DH rigs. Took a grill and cooked out burgers in the parking lot for lunch, and had a great time.
