2024 Gravity Season (races, freeride events, etc...)

Damn... lots of vitriol in the comments... without knowing what actually happened, hard to say if blame can be placed. DH racing is dangerous. Always has been.

World Championships going on... Junior Men's winning run:

Holy shit that boy is fast...

Been surreal watching his ascension. I met his dad by chance marshalling at Creek 2 years ago, said his junior son has been "doing pretty well this season" ..I was like "yeah, yeah I'll keep an eye out". Super nice family all around, I hope Neko can keep him on Frameworks after this contract ends, that just makes the whole story even cooler.

Virtually moved to Indonesia to watch Women’s finals live on YT. Men’s coverage appears to be delayed…

It’s on now, thankfully they’re exposing what DH is in case you just didn’t now, basically racing a bike on a downhill course with obstacles, the fastest time wins!

I've been jumping between feeds as they get shut down. It's been really good racing, but all of the streaming hiccups have taken some of the enjoyment out of it.

Edit: Incredible race in the end. Really happy for the winner, but super disappointed for others.

VPN to Indonesia worked pretty well, streaming was uninterrupted and commentary from Tracey Moseley was good, not sure who the other guy was. Race had a weird feeling to me, I guess the dry, dusty track was a departure what we usually see on WC. Women’s race was good but not much in term of wow moments.

MSA to go, but the 2025 schedule has been released. Anyone planning to attend the Lake Placid races in Oct?

Sweet! a new (old) venue. Now that i have a Lake Placid hookup - hoping to go next year. No idea if it will happen though.

I'm going to, most likely. I want to hear more about the venue because I've heard the DH course will be like 20 minutes away from the XC course. Which doesn't sound great. I was really hoping they'd bring snowshoe back. If it's a weird setup I may go back to MSA.

i was just in Lake Placid and yes, the venues will likely be apart but you can stay in town an get to both easily. Mt Van Hoevenberg is where the XC was this year so i assume they'll keep it there. DH has to be at Whiteface. They could build a new XC course at Whiteface but i dunno if they will.

Yeah, it's just a little less appealing not all being at one site. MSA and Snowshoe both have/had that. I'll see what my son wants to do. It was also fun staying at the mountain at MSA, not as much as Snowshoe but still good and had some partying.

And another season is gone. Also Rampage is a done deal.

Same old, same old.

I do think Brendog got robbed but I would have been more bummed if I was Szymon Godziek, and yet you can't be mad at Brandon Semenuk. Weird.

I feel like the lily pad was the defining feature

While all these guys are putting themselves at risk, you mess up that switch tailwhip to lily pad and you are going to be in a world of hurt. Most of Szymon Godziek tricks were straight flips. While super gnarly, the tech level was less than Semenuk's

Can't be mad at him at all, but they gotta recognize it's less interesting for viewers when one person dominates a sport's biggest event year after year. I know gwin and nino won almost every one of their world cups one year, but there's not as many big freeride events. The sport needs something IMO

But he didn't do any slopestyle contests in what, 2-3 years? He has barspins and multiple whips in his line, and not to mention he has the best style out there too.

And to wrap up the 2024 season, Henry from Pinkbike gets to ride one o Loic Bruni's Specialized prototype DH bikes - including a day on Loic's custom tuned Ohlins suspension. This is a surprisingly fun video to watch.
