gravel bike!!!
haha lol, thanks, I have three other better candidates in my collection right now, including one I'm building up!

This one is special and deserves to be kept original, at least for now, until it doesn't sell, then it will be parted out (sadly...)

Nice! Diamond Back really had decent offerings in the late 80s and early 90s.

Here are two of mine - the Axis Pro is full XT, the Axis TT Pro Ti is LX/XT. Great bikes!

Is there a shop sticker on it anywhere? Would be interesting to know where it originally came from....(and sometimes those shops are nostalgic and are the best candidate to get the most for it by bringing it "back home")

Actually, there is not, and there are no indications there ever was one. Really odd, too, since every other bike I've seen (as far as I can recall) has had one...

Very cool bike...If it was originally purchased at a NJ shop back in the day, I sold it to the shop originally. (I was the NJ/North Eastern PA sales rep for Diamondback during that time period). They were great bikes!

It was bought in Easton, PA from what I’d guess you’d call a scrap dealer. Not the original owner. Did your shop not install decals back then? This could easily have been one you sold! How cool. And it still is a great bike! If I didn’t have so many already I’d totally be keeping it.

Happy to answer any questions, as well!

Very cool. I sold a few of these (and a boatload of Ascents as mentioned earlier in the post) back in the day from Ramapo Valley Cycle. That smoke paint was super cool!!

I read that the smoke effect was literally done by hand in the factory - with actual smoke - do you know if that's true?

Definitely done by hand; not sure which technique was used. This one was my favorite…My buddy, Sky & Die Myers, had one…So cool…

Damn. Do you think I should raise my price and just wait?
No idea what it is worth. It is only worth what some will pay for it. That guy on ebay may be dreaming. Remember ebay fees and the shipping. Look at the sold listings on ebay; may be helpful.

Not trying to influence your bike sale, the photo was only to show the paint scheme that was my favorite.

lol thanks - yup I get it - I should have asked, 'what are the odds I can find a collector interested in this bike?' :)

The feedback I've gotten on the Retrobike.UK forums is that it's fairly priced at around $800 or so, but demand for these bikes is higher there. Here in the USA, it's a lot harder to find 'that guy.'

The shop I used to work for always installed a shop decal. At the time these bikes were new, I was the sales rep for WSI, who owned/distributed Diamondback and Centurion. I covered NJ and North Eastern PA, so I was traveling around to the shops selling them bikes/parts. Those were the highwater years of DB for sure, and it was cool selling the DBR line of high end aluminum and titanium frames/bikes. Even got to meet and hang with the old team members Dave Cullinan, Dave Wiens, Gunnar Shogren, and Susan DeMattei at shows ad meetings. One of the old racers, who became the team manager, Keith Ketterer (KK), is actually now my inside sales rep at Giant in California....

This is one of the older cool production bikes, and a nice period piece. I collect this sort of vintage for our collection at the shop, trying to preserve some of the old stuff...Once something goes into the collection, it is officially retired and not used again except for (one day) display and reference. Hope it goes to the right/good home!

I remember asking a product manager how they did the smoke effect. He told me that the frames were passed over candles that produced the smoke, which would leave the residue, then clear coated. Not sure if it was true or not, but I did have an old customer that tried the technique on a bike he was painting, and it looked pretty close to those frames.
