10 speed shifter and cassette with 11 speed derailleur?...oh and chain slap question too!

i did my google best but can't seem to find a simple answer on this...

my road bike (yes, i have a road bike too!) has a shimano ultegra rear derailleur, and 10 speed cassette. i've been getting some chain slap recently going over some rough roads, and thinking of upgrading to a clutch derailleur like the RX8000

so two questions i guess:

1) can you use an 11 speed derailleur with a 10 speed shifter / cassette combo?...oh yeah, i can't seem to find a decent 10 speed derailleur anywhere
2) any ideas, other than an older derailleur, for causes of chain slap?

thanks!

thanks!

i thought about the chain length...but i'm pretty sure i got it right. i used calvin's largest cog, largest chainring method...

If you're in "big big" which technically is a no-no but who cares, and the derailleur looks like the parktool photo, you should be pretty close. I know my old Stumpy has terrible chain slap and I don't recall my Defy being a lot better. It might be just a geometry thing? A roll of hockey tape (old skool DH fix) is pretty cheap. Or an old tube, worn tire, etc. Ask @Ashcor about the "old" tire technique. 😉

Take the cage off the derailleur. They're are two positions for the spring to go in: high and low tension; they are shipped in the low tension position because it shifts easier, but the derailleur may need it changed as it ages/for rougher conditions.
tried this today, thanks!

spring was in the right position, moved it to the left. was NOT EASY to get that spring, under load, back in!

good rainy day project...

will report back once it dries up enough for a road test, thanks again! wish me luck!
