1/2 Ton Trucks

My 2016 5.0 F150 is getting up there in miles, 225k... Starting to look at options.

I'm leaning towards a new F150, possibly with the 3.5 Ecoboost, or a Sierra. Not sure which motor to go with if I go this route, maybe the 3.0 diesel...?

I don't tow often, but when I do pull my RV I want it to be comfortable.

Any thoughts?

Thats some good usage of your truck! The 5.0 is an amazing engine especially with the 6 speed trans that you have. I have a 2015 5.0 so maybe i'm biased. Did you have any issues with the 2016 in your ownership?

All of these new trucks look awesome and it sort of seems like the dealers are coming back to earth on the pricing.....sort of... I'm interested to see what everyone says but the current 5.0's are still great engines so my vote is for a 2024 f-150 5.0

I haven't... Wheel bearing at some point, water pump around 215k. It has a CEL now, not sure what that's for yet.
I have no complaints, other than when towing the RV it's a bit sluggish, maybe because she's tired.

Oh and I don't think I am looking for new.

This is purely anecdotal, but all of my fishing buddies have moved to the 3.5, and all of them wish they still had the 8.

Iv been very happy with my RAM 1500 with the HEMI(2017), I do think new truck prices have gone nuts, not sure how the used market is, but it has been bulletproof for 135k so far, only repair i had was the bearing on the a/c clutch (weird i know), capable of 24mpg on the highway gives a 600mile driving range with the 32gallon tank. I know the new ones have nicer interiors and a bigger cab (at least for the crew) so thats something to think about. They are also unfortunately doing away with the hemi for the 25 trucks 🙁

I just never loved the Rams, not sure what it is...

I have a 2020 F-150 3.5eco, I love it. I previously had a ‘13 with the 5.0 and the V6 twin turbo has just as good and more power than the V8.
For me the only real trade off is no v8 rumble.
I did a Roush tune and cold air intake plus a resonator delete and the sound is 8/10 of the V8

I have a '23 Ford Transit 350 AWD with the Ecoboost. Use it as an adventure van for weekend trips and also towing our teardrop trailer. Gas mileage isn't great daily driving, 16-19mpg depending on how fast I drive. Usually 14-16 when towing. Plenty of power for moving a box on wheels.

If I was in the market for a truck, the F150 with the built in generator would be on the short list for several reasons, off-grid camping to power the camper and as house power during a power outage.

Most of my friends are fishing guides, they put a lot of miles on their trucks with at least half of it towing. They like the updated interiors and tech of newer F150's, but their primary issue is with the carbon buildup in the 3.5 as the mileage gets higher. Because they're towing they notice the reduction in power, sometimes the truck will misfire and throw a code which means its time for a walnut shell blast. TBH, its an issue with most direct-injection motors, but Its just one more thing to do at the beginning/end of season on top of a pile of things.

I was nervous about going with the eco when I bought this one. At that time I think there were weird things like issues when it rained.

I put a ton less miles in commuting with my new job so I'm not too worried at that.

I have a 22 2.7. Love it. I’ve pulled 9k with it once which was totally fine for a local trip but I wouldn’t want to do that all the time. 3-5k is no problem. I test drove all three engines before I bought this one and the 5.0 with the 10 speed just felt weird. Hard to describe. I do miss the v8 sound though

Walnut shell blast? I’m pleading ignorance on this. What are you talking about?

take the intake off and use a media blaster with walnut media to clean the carbon off the backside of the intake valves. Some mfg put an extra set of fuel injectors (bc why NOT add more parts to fix a problem that they created for no real reason) to wash the oil film off the back before it carbons up.

That said, the carbon build up seems to be caused by the oil mist recirculated into the intake thought the PCV, if this is correct a GOOD (not the $30 amazon special) catch can SHOULD help to cut down on the build up (maybe eliminate it if its good enough), but again, a problem created in the name of emissions compliance.

Ironically, the ford Coyote 5.0 has port injection added back in addition to the direct injection. This was done for "performance" reasons they claim.

on internet - must be true.

btw - I got the 6.2L in the Yukon...no messing around with turbos...

yea im contemplating buying a new one this year (really early considering how young mine is) to get a NA pushrod V8, even if it has that etorque garbage on it its at least a known quantity on the reliability front. Those interest rates are just damn rediculous right now.
