    Reviving CheeseQuake trail

You can add a loop that's part fire road and part paved too. Right now the bridge is out by the lake parking lot, but if they're just replacing boards it shouldn't be out for long.

Are people riding in this heat?

Just need a new place to ride to beat the heat :-).

    Rental/Demo-Trails combo

There is also a Middletown store which is closer to Hartshorne if that type of riding is interesting. Make sure you give them a few days notice in case they need to bring a bike up from Brielle....

    Crank arm loose

Did you try to stick a 10mm allen (or maybe 8?) through the outer hole? You're not removing the cap on the crank. You're removing the bolt behind that cap. The bolt will push on the cap and push the arm off. BFH is a bad idea in this case. Especially if the inner bolt hasn't been loosened up yet!

    Crank arm loose

If you can tighten it then you can also take it off. It may be a good idea to pull it out and inspect the bearings to to make sure that riding it loose didn't mess them up. At least make sure that they feel tight and move smoothly. You can remove the crank and then stick your finger in the...

    Reviving CheeseQuake trail

It's not bad. A few days ago there was still a puddle at the parking lot entrance, some at the creek crossing just up from there, and a little mud up near the dog kennels. I think everything else was fine.

    Reviving CheeseQuake trail

I don't think you can legally ride the trails above. Only the white trail, Perrine Road and Museum Road. The white trail is currently more like 2.3 miles for the loop vs 3 miles. Even thought it's only 2.3 miles you can still get a pretty good workout there. When you at the road, facing the...

MTBNJ Chimney Rock Group Ride - Sunday 12/13

Interesting. Here's what I do. I'm not claiming this is "better", just different. If there's something bad about doing this way I'd like to know so I can "unlearn" it.... Often, on a turn I will put the inside peddle up and the outside peddle down. This seems to result in the fewest pedal...

    Tightening Loose Spokes

No, but the air is out. I have to remove the tire to measure roundness. If I use the pencil strapped to the frame I can't see any visible out of round. I also can't see any "bump" when spinning the wheel. That measurement may have to wait for a pro. The wheel appears to be evenly spaced in...

    Tightening Loose Spokes

OK, with a few minor tweaks I got everything to within 20 percent. The new averages are 65 on the left and 110 on the right. I think there's still some room for improvement, but I may put a few trail miles on it to see if things change much after 20 or 30 miles. The rim runout is .015 inches...

    Tightening Loose Spokes

Yes I used the gap tool and got 1.8. I only measured in the middle. You are correct - at the nipple it's 2.0. First I trued the rim using two pencils secured to the to swing arms. One on each side. This ensured that I didn't **change** the dish. If it was already screwed up then it was that...

    Tightening Loose Spokes

Thanks for the feedback. Wheels are 29" WTB SX19 with disc brakes. Here's how I'm taking readings: 1) center the tool between the nipple and the first cross 2) squeeze handle, set spoke against two posts 3) gently/slowly release handle 4) measure As far as I can tell the spokes are steel/1.8...

    Tightening Loose Spokes

Here are some measurements with the Park tool. I may be up to about 90 miles now. This is the REAR wheel and each ring represents 25 KGF. I think that all the spokes need to be tightened up. There's no way that this came from the factory sufficiently tight. It's not the tool, since the front...

    Tightening Loose Spokes

I prefer to work on my own stuff where possible. I'll usually try to buy parts and tools from my LBS. For example I can probably save $10 on this tool by buying online. If the LBS has it in stock then I'll probably buy it on my way home tonight.

    Tightening Loose Spokes

New bike/rims. About 65 miles ridden so far. I notice the rear wheel was out of true and tightened a few spokes by hand and then added 1/2 turn to put some tension on them. I can't tighten by sound, but I was able to set up my phone as a sound meter. I was able to go through and get the spokes...

    27.5 Vs 29 Recommendations/Suggestions for new bike

Thanks, I also appreciate you making tweaks on the fly in order to try to dial in the different bikes I was trying. 29, took it out to Allaire today. It was fun. The person I normally ride with was having a problem keeping up too

    27.5 Vs 29 Recommendations/Suggestions for new bike

Thanks for all the advice. I decided to blow my budget and went with a full suspension Salsa Spearfish. It's a small, but somewhat larger than the 15.5" Trek. distance from the center of the handlebars to the center of the seat is within 1/2" of the bike I have been riding for the last 10 years.

    27.5 Vs 29 Recommendations/Suggestions for new bike

Close, more like 29" If I was wearing a cup, every time I dismount on the 17.5" frame there would be a clunk. The guy at the bike shop "strongly suggested" sticking to a 15.5" frame size due to the limited distance between the top tube and "the boys". I could probably do a 17.5" frame if the...

    27.5 Vs 29 Recommendations/Suggestions for new bike

I went and looked at some trek hard tails. 17.5 is too big, my legs are too short. So 15.5 it is.That means 27.5 if it's a Trek. It looks like the Trek options are a Superfly 6 and Trek X-Caliber 9 The Superfly is $400 more than the X-Caliber, but it seems like it still may be a good value.
