Tariffs...what to make of them.

I can't believe there isn't more of an uproar form the MAGA base. He's broken all of his campaign promises, not that it was unexpected. Lower prices? America First, no foreign wars? And where's that low cost health insurance to replace Obamacare? Just to name a few.

I think there's been a "quiet withdraw". There used to be a ton of Trump banners around my area... and now I don't see anywhere near as many.

Just paid $10 for a gallon of milk..
It was the long shelf life kind, but even.....

Amazingly, 18 eggs $2.50. (is that good?)

Hmm... just bought milk last night and the price was about the same - $4.83 for a gallon of whole. Selection was odd... all of the 2% was gone from the store.

I bought repop shimano 600 ax brake lever hoods last september on Ebay from Poland and the seller said he couldn't ship them because packages had been getting stuck at customs. He said I could wait and he would ship them later. Well, I reached out to see if he could ship them and he said he needed $35 more for shipping. I was thinking since the transaction was already complete and I had already paid for shipping that it would be his problem not mine. He ended up shipping them and told me he had to pay for it and was now only making $12 for the hoods. Now I just got an invoice from UPS for $15.80 import duties. With that the hoods cost me $75. Pretty annoying for me and the seller, especially since if they had come from China they would have likely been free shipping.

When asked by Fox News White House senior correspondent Peter Doocy about Iran’s strikes on Gulf states Monday, Donald Trump said experts had not anticipated Tehran would target neighboring countries.

"Nobody. Nobody. The greatest experts — nobody thought they were going to hit," Trump said when Doocy asked about Iranian attacks targeting Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Kuwait.

So after the last time we attacked Iran and they responded by attacking the surrounding gulf states....Nobody in this group anticipated that Iran would do the same thing again.

The incompetence is truly mind blowing

I'm sure shippers are screwing over overseas sellers trying to extract more processing costs out of them, but it should be clear the actual US tariff/import duties are paid by the buyer in the US, not the seller.

I make no claims to be a tariff expert, but I've bought enough pricey car parts from overseas to have some experience with the system prior to all of this. In all cases, I received a duty bill from the shipper (DHL and UPS).

That Trump keeps managing to convince the average snope that tariffs on imported items will be paid by the exporting country and NOT the US consumer is one of the biggest failings of the US education system. And the general attitude of not just being willfully ignorant of how things work, but actually proud of their ignorance and not willing to accept being wrong.

The reality is I'm sure there were people who said this would happen but tRUMP and hegsetth couldn't care less since they think they're so tough and strong it wouldn't matter because we would win so fast. "Hey Putin, hold my beer."

How long for the bills to arrive? I'm still waiting to see what shows up for a purchase 3 weeks ago.

It varies depending on the shipping company. It's also possible the shipping company has a $$ threshold level where it's cheaper to eat it rather than try to collect it. I've always suspected that was the reasoning behind the previous $800 threshold. The Treasury Dept likely determined the administration costs to receive import duties below a certain threshold was higher than actual duty received.

Plus, with the recent SCOTUS decision, I doubt any company wants to receive a tariff from a buyer and then have to turn around and give it back. That would definitely be admin costs they would never get back.

I can.

It's a cult. I'm not saying that to be facetious, they've made MAGA their entire personality and admitting Trump has done anything wrong would be heresy. That and their spoonfed propaganda to their TV screens 24/7. I've watched both of my immigrant parents get sucked down this rabbit hole. I saw a slight hiccup with the Russia/Ukraine stuff but back to the talking points the next week.

It's actually kinda amusing to see. Trump does something clearly against what he ran on, the MAGA base kinda pushes back, Fox News gives them their talking points, 24 hours later they recite the same argument they heard on there verbatim.

I've watched this first hand with my MAGA father. Very interesting for him to say "well, the other countries are paying for the tariffs." speaking slowly watching his brain internally fight two thoughts at once and letting the MAGA side win out.

He's in the import business, so he clearly knows how it all works. Just has the capability to lie to himself about it without seeing it.
