Last year I had a professional training coach for 6 months leading into the Cancer charity ride (first time ever having a cycling coach) and the majority of his training plan was endurance and SST intervals with some occasional Z4+ type efforts.
Occasionally you will see a workout like this:
Ride for 3 hours at L2/L3 pace
Every 15 minutes do a 30-60 second all out sprint
Go home and rest
Many people think the 30-60 second sprint is what the target is. Every coach will tell you the whole point if this is to get you out there for 3 hours. You can replace "all out sprint" with "do 5 hail marys" or "sing a song of sixpence" and it'll get you the same results.
