I saw this critter today on the trail. What is he?

I was on my local trails today and this guy came across the trail about 10 feet ahead of me and he just hung out about 20 feet away staring. We locked eyes and had a moment. I think it is a coyote, but I didn't know that they were in such a populated area in NJ. I named him Snuggles.

Picture is pretty blurry but looks too big to be a coyote may be a coy wolf if it is the size I think it is. Both are pretty common in NJ, and are pack animals but it may be a juvenile on its own to find its own territory.
