Taming the Sourlands aka Conquering your Nemesis

Conditions there today were perfect and the slightly colder weather in the am kept a lot of hikers away. Did not come across a single other biker out there today. This place needs more love

    Crank Removal

Certainly has been a while. I’ve been hitting it with a rubber mallet and it hasn’t budged. Good idea to try with a piece of wood over the end with a hammer. The spindle seems to be revolving along with the inner part of the bottom bracket. Never had an issue with removing any other cranks before

    Crank Removal

Trying to remove my crank so I can clean/service my bottom bracket. I’m able to remove the drive side of the crank, however the non driver side that has the spindle attached to it won’t come out. Any ideas? The crank is a RaceFace affect 175mm direct mount cinch. Bottom Bracket appears to be...

    20-21 Ski/Snowboard thread

For those who love to ski bumps, where is your local go to spot? Belleayre use to have a few decent mogul runs, but within the past few seasons, the window to ski moguls has been very short. Seems like most local resorts in PA or NY cater to just flat/groomed terrain.

    6 Mile Run Conditions

Six mile should be closed for the entire freeze/thaw cycle. Sourlands should get more love in the winter months when conditions are dry. But not with the hikers. For the love of god, no more hikers please

    Front brake failing mid-ride

I still have the M7 but planned on keeping it as a spare in case anything goes wrong with my rear M7. I would be hesitant to sell it otherwise though, given I could not get it to perform properly. My guess at this point is that the pistons are not balanced properly. I made sure they were...

    Sourlands Mountain Preserve Conditions

I was there Saturday morning and the amount of hikers there have reached a level of insanity. Parking lot at 730am, seeing only a few cars, I was somehow optimistic the big crowds may be dying down a bit. Boy was I wrong. The final descent on boulderama was a disaster. There’s an assembly line...

    Sourlands Mountain Preserve Conditions

It’s certainly been getting more popular here over the past few years, but today was something like I’ve never seen before. Boulderama was unrideable at certain points because there were so many hikers coming the opposite direction. I chatted with another biker in the lot before leaving. He...

    Sourlands Mountain Preserve Conditions

Conditions were great this morning but get there early. 730am parking lot was filling up fast. 1030am, virtually no place to put your car

It's crazy what you find when remodeling

I discovered this behind some drywall in my basement doing some remodeling a few years back. Given I’m from Staten Island, I naturally assumed this had to be mob related :)

    Front brake failing mid-ride

Really interesting info, I never knew this. Thank you. Given that this past Saturday was a very humid day, perhaps some moisture seeped through the caliper seals then causing the issue. Prior to the ride, I did tighten the bolt that connects the line to the brake caliper about a quarter turn...

    Front brake failing mid-ride

You’ve peeked my interest with the Hopes. Time to compulsively research yet another bike component

    Front brake failing mid-ride

I’ve wondered why this was myself. It’s a closed system so if there is no leak, how does air continue to get into the brake system? But yes I agree, when they work right, man are these brakes responsive.

    Front brake failing mid-ride

I truly hate the bleeding process for Magura brakes. It never seems to go smoothly. Agreed that Shimano brakes are much easier to bleed. I have a pair of M447 on my other bike. Makes it so easy to bleed given there is a shut off valve for the oil reservoir when taking out the syringe. I...

    Front brake failing mid-ride

I bled them a few days prior to the ride seeing the front brake was a bit less responsive than the rear. Seemed that I had a successful bleed, but I'm an amateur with most bike maintenance so I can't be certain. Seeing the brake is okay now, I'm reluctant to send it to my LBS. Perhaps I'll try...
