Forgot to mention, I hung out to watch and cheer for the other categories race. The few mud holes on course were definitely not getting any better with time and those Cat1 and Pro fields managed to put down some spectacular lap times despite the worsening conditions!

IDK, sounded like the more appealing option of the early morning starts ,I figured 4 hours might dig a deep hole, and I've never done an endurance race so it seemed fair to try novice.
I was torn between doing that or the cat1 with @jShort if that race weren't so late...
The ~$1500 price range would typically put you on an alloy frame with mechanical disc brakes and an 8 or 9 speed shimano or microshift group. Not tubeless ready wheels too.

I took a free course with the state ~15 years ago. After a quick google it looks like those don't exist anymore but would 100% recommend taking a rider training course even if it costs a few bucks.
