Asheville, NC

If you are looking for southern chicken visit Rocky's hot chicken shack https://rockyshotchickenshack.com for some spicy chicken and fried Okra.

I second Bent Creek for some solid climbs (Ingles field climb and greens lick down) and free flow downhill. Black Mt in Pisgah is super fun too on the lower half, Sycamore flat is right there too and fun but short. Dupont is so far my favorite since I got here a few months back. If you are here on a weekend hit me up and I can help with my limited local knowledge.

when are you heading down? a few of us local edison/metuchen folks are going down late october (oct 24 - 28) to see a friend of ours who recently moved there. we plan on doing some road and MTB riding over three or four days as well!
Do you have any details of your rides?

we did three rides...one road two mtb

the road ride was my mitchell - hardest thing i’ve ever done on a bike! toms of climbing in the fog!

mtb day 1 was dupont - super fun flowy goodness!

mtb day 2 was bent creek - lots of climbing with a ton of fast downhills and way more tech than dupont

overall and awesome trip and looking forward to heading back soon!

here are the strava links to the rides

I think I am going to hit Bent Creek. I only have one day to ride. The plan is to rent a Timberjack from Liberty and it is about 12 miles from my hotel so I will ride there, do the ride and then ride to return the bike.

Which route do you think would be better when I get there?

or Pony's Route?

My recommendation for one ride if you like fast flow stuff like Kingdom Trails would be Dupont. If you want a taste of real Pisgah Black Mtn Trail.

just a heads up on renting from liberty...they were very nice dudes, but....we rented two road bikes from them, one had a front derailleur that was basically busted...and then we rented three MTBs from them...one they had a mix-up on so my buddy couldn't get a bike in his size...

also, they would not rent bikes with the next day's forecast calling for rain. totally fair, but i asked, how about i take the bike, and promise to not ride it, in fact, bring it back to the store, if the trails are wet. no go...

again, they were very nice dudes, just had a little bit of trouble getting in and out of there without issues. for what it's worth, the folks at the HUB in Pisgah were super awesome, and that shop rocks, and they have BEER! however, it's about 20 minutes south of where liberty is...

last thing - if you have a choice, i would go for a Full Squish ride as opposed to the hardtail...those downhills are LONG!

Thank you to everyone for your info. I rode at sunrise from my hotel 11 miles to Bent Creek. I did the loop from PPony's route and then headed back to Liberty Cycle to return the bike. The bike was good, but I had two issues with them. First, I had the bike for less than 24 hours and I was charged for two days. Second, I rode the bike right in from the trail and the dude kept saying that I crashed the bike and there was damage that didn't happen when I was riding. I literally rode in right from the trail and there were not shifting issues during the whole ride. The dude just kept giving me the third degree. I would probably not rent from them if I return.

On another note, we did Buxton Hall for lunch. It was incredible. Then we went to New Belgium to visit Fat Tire adn the tour was fun. Then, we visited Wicked Weed, Green Man, Burial Beer. Dinner was at the Lobster Trap which was excellent. We went to a piano bar, but they were not very good singers, I would probably not return to that.

Thanks for the offer. I am unfortunately leaving today. I would have gone to something more interesting, but, no car and this was the most convenient. I am sure we will come back and I will be able to hit some of the other things here.

Cool. What was the weather like during your trip?

BTW-The HUB is a cool shop but some of the mechanics talk some serious shit which is quite entertaining while drinking some beers; Sycamore Cycles is also good.

It was very cold. About 25-30 degrees, but nice out. It rained pretty hard the night before, but the trails were not very wet. Hopefully, the next time I go, I will be able to venture out further and ride more. I would definitely rent from a different shop next time. I really wanted to ride up to Mt. Mitchell, but with the rain the night before and the freezing temperatures, made me a bit nervous.
