What happened to game night?

My 20 yr old son will play Texas holdem poker with the family, in fact he taught us how to play when we where on vacation. We got chips and had a buy in of like $5. I'm not sure how wholesome it is to sit around with extended family gambling and drinking but at least we where degenerates together.
I had been playing casino games with the kids since they were little (mostly blackjack and paigow poker-my favorite card game), but using jelly beans. But then they stopped liking the beans so that was that. One day I'll give them a simulated game where we use real money and they can see how fast they can go through $1000 with any game of chance. When they are older, I'll get a craps table.

my kids say their friends like it but it more like trivia pursuit without the pursuit. Really more of a drinking, casual game with no conclusion. And some topics are awkward with kids as you know.

i love cards against humanity, but its more like apples to apples than trivia pursuit, i have every card theyv made, and i ended up buying the 'new' bigger blacker box this year since i got tired of having 3 boxes of cards, its always a hit, but like you said, no real end to the game (unless you have a group that can burn the entire deck of white cards)

My daughter likes to play exploding kittens, othello, magic and a bunch of other games. I wish we had the time to play more but alas, she’s almost 16...

my kid just downloaded something to the Xbox to run a game (collection of mini-games) in which each person uses their phone -
you need to be in the room, because it uses the TV to prompt.
ran out of time last night to try it out. will report back.

Jackbox Party Pack ??

Fibbage is a ton of fun to play. It's a game where there's a question put up on the screen and everyone uses their phone to make up silly answers and then you have to choose the correct answer which is mixed in with your made up answers. Also, really enjoy catch phrase

+1 on the Jackbox Party Packs. I bring my laptop with us whenever we see friends or family so that we can play. There is one game in particular, Drawful, that is a HUGE hit with our friends and family.

Spaceteam is a good game that happens in short, easily digestible rounds. You work cooperatively to fix your broken space ship in 5 minutes using shared tools. You can adjust difficulty by making it shorter and adding cards.

If the kids are attached to their phones, they may actually be able to get down with Weave. Think "Dungeons and Dragons" but you use a companion app to create your character and capture images of the cards that are played to trigger events. Very cool.

We have always been big fans of Machi Koro, too. Easy to pick up, can apply different strategies, and can also expand it if the base version is boring. You build a city by purchasing different cards, and rolling dice to see the effect of those cards.

We just got some new games that I will report back on.

Space team looks great, going to pick up a set, looking forward to the others

As a kid, we had a summer in the mid 70’s at sleep away camp where it rained constantly. If I never see another board game again I’ll die a happy camper... my wife and sons on the other hand love cards against humanity.... not sure that counts doe.

We played Heads Up (iphone app) over the weekend with some friends and that killed a good hour with some laughs. Worth the $0.99. Expansion packs more $$

our teenage kids still love playing monopoly (we've eliminated all of the game extension aspects, like putting money in free parking, etc - so you can play a "real game" in around 2 hours), risk, ticket to ride, and we just taught them hearts over xmas break. on NYE we also played some card based search engine game (can't remember the name of it) that was like apples to apples, but with search engine terms. like, "what do people use to clean_________" and you have to guess what the #1 suggested search term would be etc...it was pretty fun

The pieces never lasted with this one.

(I’m in it for all the cheezy jingles!)

my kid's hated this one as the pop up racket scared them from the beginning. Same for Operation, where you're the doctor...
I picked up Perfection at a second hand store and was in near new condition and likely a better build than current versions. For older games it's worth looking at those stores. Some were never used and cost a fraction of retail.

We've been playing Blokus latey... fun game with a bit of strategy required.
that reminds me of Chinese checkers, that and regular checkers were never a favorite for the kids. Anyone know why it's called Chinese checkers, cause my wife who grew up in China never seen the game as a kid
