The 2018 Winter Olympics Thread

all I can find this morning on that kid that crashed is:
Japan’s press officer says Yuto Totsuka has “no big injury”but pain in his hip and was transported to the hospital.

i know he was pumped after that first run, but man he looked like a tool throwing his helmet and goggles into the crowd.

I didn’t like that either. Typical American, celebrating victory before victory.

Today has perhaps the most masochistic event in the entire Olympics, the Nordic Combined. That's XC skiing combined with ski jump. So it's basically, "Let's go make our hearts explode and then slide off a cliff on sticks." Why not just throw in "wrestle a polar bear" for tie-breakers? As much as I hate winter, I love the Winter Olympics. In so many ways, it just boils down to a showcase for Northern Europeans from ice-covered hellscapes trying to kill themselves outdoors.

Not really just an American thing. Every elite athlete that knows that they just nailed it do this, especially in sports that are judged subjectively, as it can sway the judges. In this particular case, there was no questions what so ever. They even do the same shit in figure skating.

Ok so did Shawn White get robbed on run #1 because it was just the first run? I know they will score low but I felt like that was better than a 94.
The problem with snowboard judging is that it appears to be very subjective. Shaun White had a great performance in the qualifiers because he wanted to be the last to go. The last run is the only run than can get a perfect 100 (at least, that is what the announcers said during Chloe Kim's run).
I don't think the individual tricks have a published degree of difficulty with points deducted for short rotation, so the judges give a score knowing they may see a better run that needs to be scored higher. White got the lower score on run #1 so that the judges had room to move up.

I do get that, but at the same time, was the Japanese guy's 2nd run better? IDK, I did not think so but I'll cede this is not my area at all. Was this really the judges just saying that White absolutely had to nail run #3 to earn the gold? If he had done the same run as #1 cleanly, would he have still won?

He has earned a 100 before, twice actually according to google. I haven't looked into if that was his first or last run or if competitors went before him.
If they gave him a 100 for his first run, and the japanese guy did the same exact run with one more twist, what do they give him? hmm subjective judging is tricky.

Wasn't Sean's winning run the same as the Japanese kid's previous run where he got a 95?

Best sport. This and ski-guns; Martin Fourcade is an animal. We should do more ski-guns.

Even if the cold and snow lined up at the same time, no ski-guns in NJ. Ski sometimes, guns forget it. Closest place around here to seriously train is Craftsbury VT. Six of their athletes are at the games in Korea.

Skiguns makes me wants to try XC skiing again. I've been downhill skiing/racing since I was 7 or 8 and I couldn't get used to the fact that the heel is not attached. The few times I tried, mostly up by Lake Placid/Saranac, I busted my ass so many times. Those dudes have massive legs. I'd like to git gud.

And yes, Curling is DOPE. I need to convince my gf to start training with me for 2022 coed team.

Are these any good?
