Losing a summer and tossing out a fall.

-I've noticed that in the past and I think it's slightly wrong. I don't think I've done a cross race in the rain or even really bad conditions. That may be based on overall weather for the day or weekend. Worst may have been providence last year.
-I really need to stop lining up in the very, very back. It's fun to pass people but it really throws out my final placement.

Looking back over that, CXMeur. Course was a wet muddy disaster and I was on my 29er. I felt pretty good on the fact that it was slippery as heck and everyone else was struggling. I clearly remember everyone passing on the clean straight sections. 🙂

That race was a muddy mess........ Really fun.

To toss out an update.

Saturday: Joy was going to Mahlon in the morning I was planning a 7am freewheeler road ride. I got about 2 hours of sleep so scratched the group ride and was going to go do a road ride whenever. When we swapped cars at 8am I said fuck this and road the trainer.
Sunday: Hopped on a Stewart ride. Half of the DH40 course. No issues with shoulder whatsoever until Steph shook my hand after the ride and it felt like she ripped it out of the socket. I should be careful around people who wrestle bears.

So no crashes and no pain/etc. Super hot out and felt like I could have done 20 more miles. Far from race pace and walked a couple small sections not out of fear but cautious decision making. No issues pushing/pulling on the bars including small drops and small logs.

Not sure what my plan is for the week with a hectic work schedule and this horrible heat. At least now I know I can make the Stewart group ride next week which was phase1 of my vacation up to Montreal.

Granogue : Registration is closed, there's a waitlist. I'm pretty much OK with skipping this race. It's early and technicalish so there's the safety concern, plus it's pretty damn far. There's always the possibility of doing the Singlespeed class if my brain stops functioning correctly to make good decisions.

Nittany: On the radar for Saturday and there's a ton of spots left. I can easily take it or leave it. Up in the air. Sunday is GirlsGutsGlory at Lewis Morris so I'll probably be riding the trails there with the bullhorn behind @MissJR on her running portion of the race.

Bubble Cross: Signed up for Saturday & Sunday, and @The Heckler convinced me that signing up for Singlespeed class would be a good idea. I'm sure it's not, but I'm now registered and will hate myself. Since I was the first person registered I should maybe work on race starts...

I think with the new updated NJCup calendar I may be able to pretty much make all those dates. I threw out the possibility of doing any of the New England events but the email this morning from Providence makes me wonder if that may be a good weekend up there as the new venue may be nice. Gotta look and see if there's anything else around there to do...

So to throw this thread into a wildly different direction and to provide full disclosure... I'm not really one to talk about myself.

So one minor comment in my Surgeon's report about my bone seeming weak led me to ask for a DEXA scan when I visited the doctor. I'm 36 and most people getting a DEXA scan are 70+ but fuck it, better safe than sorry I also asked for a shitload of other tests from the doctor. I find it annoying I have to ask for these things and the doctor doesn't recommend them but that's besides the point...

So I get a call today from the doctor as my DEXA scan result came back. I have osteoporosis... WTF? That's a pretty big deal. Looking up reasons for this all I can determine is I was a fat lazy kid. I don't smoke, drink, etc etc. Maybe my plan to crash onto my left side instead of right has a fault in it.
My TSH (thyroid) is also pretty high, went for more blood work on that yesterday. May be something, may be nothing. May be completely related to the above.
My LDL cholesterol is off the charts. Got a particle count which is the important thing. I'm not so concerned about this as my triglycerides are in the low end, HDL is normal, seems my LDL is mostly large (but very abundant..) particles. May be related to the above.

So seems I have a disease that affects the elderly and I currently don't know why. I'd rather find out now than later which is why I figured I'd ask for the additional tests after breaking the clavicle. And if I'm going to break a bone to alert me to an issue I'd rather it's my clavicle than my hip.

So now I guess I'm on a journey to figure out wtf is up. I may go down to Princeton later today to see if House can figure this out.

TLDR summary:
1 - I have a disease that affects the elderly and may be related or caused by some other issue.
2 - I'm still planning on this cross season.
3 - Shoulder feels great. Bit more concerned to the level of healing in the bone however due to the above...

What's your history with strength training?

I ask because it could have implications for your recovery from the shoulder injury as well as the osteoporosis issue.

Nothing crazy.

Up until just before the accident I was doing the gym about 3 times a week for rows, overhead press, squats and dead lifts.

Right now I'll start with 5lbs 10 reps with the arms doing dumbell overhead press, curls and pulls and keep doing sets going up 5lbs to 25lbs a couple times a week. No issue from the shoulder so far. I only have kettle bells past 25lbs.

I haven't been staying on top of this but constantly working on movement and range of motion without weights throughout the day.

Any input?

Just an update to the schedule.

Skipping Nittany due to Shilling ride at Allaire. No brainer.

Hippo Cross - Great event last year. Hoping they fixed course issues.
Bubble Cross - Still registered for Cat 5 both days plus SS.

Undecided on a few others in there.

JINGLE CROSS - As dumb as this sounds, this may happen. I may be flying out to Iowa for work that week. If so I seriously can go race Friday morning and then again Sunday. It's not like I'm all looking forward to going alone to this race but it is a World Cup race. Awaiting to hear back on scheduling. I could in theory go race and then fly home hardly even impacting my schedule but then I'd miss the festivities.

I'd be working the week after but last week of Sept was the first date I could get with an endocrinologist. Have I mentioned after breaking a bone, finding out I have an auto-immune disorder and related items that the health care system kind of sucks?

have you heard of the theories of excessive cycling bringing on bone density loss? i don't know if it has been debunked. i do remember reading about it, like these spots:

http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/07/01/is-bicycling-bad-for-your-bones/?_r=0

and something more recent:
http://www.peakendurancecoaching.ie/2016/08/26/cyclists-and-bone-health/

again - i am no doctor or research scientist. just an accountant who reads crap posted online.

and i'm sorry about the autoimmune stuff. it really sucks. my wife has an autoimmune disease. seriously it sucks.

Actually, I know about the bone loss stuff, heard about it awhile ago. Don't worry, I don't cycle nearly enough for that to be a concern. 🙂 Plus I run somewhat, do (or did) weights which is suppose to be beneficial.

Outside of breaking bones, I don't think I have real symptoms. Only symptoms I can even contribute may be cold hands/feet. Just got a call from the doctor that whatever other useless tests they ran came back "normal". Which could be entirely bullshit. One thing I've learned is the reference ranges for blood tests are not "ideal" ranges.

Get to see the surgeon for the last time tomorrow. I got my clavicle X-Rayed on Friday. It looks good to me and way better than 4 weeks ago, we'll see what he says.

IMO it's BS.

A while ago, some university did a study of the basketball team's jerseys after practice. Guess what they found in the sweat in the jersey? Sodium and calcium. It seems pretty obvious to me that sweating means you lose sodium and calcium.

Why our society has latched on to weight lifting as a way to counter this...I can't say. A guess would be that they test weight lifters against cyclists and the bone density is mistaken as correlation.

Weight lifters by trade generally don't sweat as much as endurance athletes and eat plenty to sustain muscle growth. Cyclists want to look like Kate Moss so they ride 5 hours and eat as little as possible (well not me).

They then look at runners and make the mistake that running is ok. Reality is that nobody runs for 5 hours. My guess is that if you test the bone density of long distance runners who put in the same number of hours as cyclists you'll see similar results.

that makes sense. especially the diet thing. cyclists can be exercise anorexics, and the study is on the extreme end. i haven't been able to find any stuff on the other side that's easily found. i'm curious if anyone is studying to debunk or if there isn't a call to look into it.

I'm using a Wahoo Tikr because it's bluetooth using my phone and tracking through EliteHRV. Checking later in the day my heart rate will be ~60bpm so it's an upon waking thing. The meter is pretty consistent if I wet the electrodes well. If they're not wet yes it'll read super-high unreliable readings. I actually ordered electrode gel from Amazon...

Air conditioned condo, not sure how heat is affecting me. Joy turned it on while I was in the hospital in June and it's been on ever since since global warming turns out to be real this summer.

Did I mention I went into the hospital at the same time the cat went to the feline hospital? I think she put the air conditioning on because of him and not me, but I'll just leave that alone.

Do you check this high waking heartrate you see on the heart monitor with a simple check pulse with a stopwatch method?

Hey there. Congrats on your road to recovery. I'm with @pooriggy on jra but seems you have your plan in place. Do the best to erase any perceived losses in your head. Will be lurking this thread.

- I don't check the heart rate vs old school. However I have no real reason to believe it's not accurate or consistent. I do find the Wahoo sucks at connecting to the phone sometimes, and it may start out at some crazy high heart rate and need to settle down into my heart rate. Heart rate has stabilized down to normal in the past few weeks. Maybe I was sick? I dunno.

- I wasn't aware Joe Rogan has osteoporosis. He did mention recently he has Hashimoto's. I've been researching it alot and it seems 85% of the people with it are female. I'm wondering how accurate this is as males seem to not exhibit symptoms where females have way more hormonal things going on and auto-immune diseases wreak havoc. If it wasn't for breaking my bone I would have not found out and I'm wondering how many other males would be in the same spot.

-There's a few things with weight lifting & running/impact where the body builds up the muscle to compensate. This isn't necessary for non-impact events like cycling so there's no bone improvement. I'm not a scientist.
