Stewart State Forest this morning. It really felt like I had the whole place to myself. I didn't see another soul. Well, I did see a small herd of deer and a couple squirrels. There is ZERO snow on the ground and the trails are rock hard. Very light flurry throughout. There is 1-3" of snow expected, but then followed by rain. So, that ought to change things in the next 24 hours. It was 7* at the start and a balmy 9* when I left. I bought a new Marmot mid-layer over the weekend. It passed the test today.

Pics...

Just a pic of the trail conditions. This is going up Escarpment before the nice 'bomb' down to '46 Ford...

The '46 Ford. I put the hood back on...

Balmy, but really without much wind and properly dressed, it wasn't too bad.

rough day.

went out to hit the snow before it turned to rain. i started off by exploring some deer trails i spotted while playing cameras the other day, and found some really cool lines that will be tested when theyre not covered in ice and glaciers

then i decided to quit screwing around in the reeds and just ride my damn bike, came upon my friend who apparently had texted me just after i left, but i didnt hear my phone go off in my bag. my friend was walking, so i come up to him and ask whats happenin? he had just eaten it on a board and landed on his right asscheek pretty hard, and was havin trouble pedaling up hills. he tells me to pass him as hes gonna be going slow, so i said ill meet him at the top of the hill as i snacked on some food.

he gets to the top and i can see hes hurting bad, he tells me to go on ahead and i tell him "screw that ill stay with you back to your car". i asked him how bad it was and he said "oh ill probably be going to the hospital when i get back in my car". for the next hour or so we trudge through the snow till its flat enough for him to pedal again, off/on/off/on, but his adrenaline is wearing off and the pain is getting worse and worse. it gets to the point where i have to carry him up a couple roots and rocks and steep hills. finally we get through all the ups and bumps and i think he had talked himself out of the hospital at some point. we roll up to his car and he says "so whatcha think, should i go to the hospital?" i tell him "yeah, that would probably be a good idea, call the wife and daughter first to tell them the deal" (theyre both in medical field), then let me know whats happening later.

wife called me while i was thawing out my toes in the shower, (i didnt lose any today, but i think i came close. i need to quit dickin around and get me some wolvhammers) and says he got home safely but hes in a lot of pain so theyre "figuring out what to do next" which means "convince him to actually go to the hospital". currently awaiting response, most likely went to hosp. hopefully he didnt break anything, though if he broke anything in the pelvic region he wouldnt be moving and doing nothing but screaming in pain. thank god i decided to take the longer route as im not quite sure he wouldve made it back to his car alone, oof!

Another new park day, this time Wharton State Park with @michael.su. Started off ~ 11 am from the Batsto lot - already snowing and colder than we thought it would be. Rode the orange 19 mile loop as I was hoping to get in 3 hrs moving time - turns out it wasn't in the cards. We ran into only one biker the whole time, good ol @Juggernaut going in the opposite direction. After about 7 miles in had my first crash - pretty comical as smaller pine trees were bent over into the trail and I caught one with my bars - actually sprung back and shot me off the back of the bike and I landed on my back - well cushioned by my camelbak - no harm, no foul. A little later a similar spin around on another small tree. We stopped around the half way point for a pic

A little further, we stopped and switched places - me leading now as I said how Mike missed my earlier crashes. Didn't think there'd be another but

(for @soundz)

My pedal caught something in the snow at speed and I flew otb - had I landed normally in superman belly flop would've been no problem but I got spun to the right and landed on my right shoulder - the frozen sand felt like concrete and I felt a crack when I landed. Hurt like hell so had to walk it off for a few minutes, then rode on. Shoulder wasn't too bad but a sharp pain with a deep breath, knew that from previous experience. Anywho, finished the loop without further incident, Mike bolted. With about 2 hrs 8 min moving time, figured I could get to 3. Headed out on the blue trail - unlike orange, there are some roots, and every time I went over one my shoulder jolted with pain. Stopped by a lake for a pic

media

Started riding again and noticed the rear tire felt weird - figured it was caked with snow so stopped - it was flat as a pancake - wtf? How'd I get a flat here? Pumped it up and immediately heard hissing. Rode it anyways and got another 1/2 mile before completely flat again. With no spare tube to throw in this tubeless tire, threw in the towel and hiked back to the car.

media

Didn't even make it to 2.5 hrs. Took off and stopped for a hoagey with Mike, then drove home. Shoulder felt progressively worse as I drove, by the time I got home I could barely get off my underarmor top - took a shower and headed to the ER for xrays. After and hour and a half and about 10 xrays of my shoulder and chest, the verdict - nothing broken! Goes to show this old bird can still take a licking and keep on ticking. Mike suggested via tm that I should head back out and get that 38 minutes - shoulda said that to wifey just to see her reaction. 😱

So it's snowing out when I leave for my ride. Do I take the fatbike out?
No. I take the bike with 2.1's and no gears.

It was fun though. Except that for the second half of the ride I had about 15% visibility through my glasses (mostly through my right eye),
and 0% rear brake since the caliper froze up. You're supposed to pee on it to defrost it, right?

Edit: part of today's bike choice was to shake down the new to me hoops. They rock- thanks @walter
