Need Beefy sidewalls !

My riding style somehow seems to shred my sidewalls .Jim V suggests a new tire each time in hopes that soemthing will be better .
It's a 29'er , tubeless on the stock HiFi Deluxe rims .

I ride strictly at Mahlon, so terrain is rocks , rock gardens and more rocks .

I'm riding about 24psi . Initially I was at about 30 and Jim Said that was way to high .

It seems to be more on the rear , but I'm also seeing on the front .

Yesterday I finally had a sidewall shred so much that the stans goo could not seal it up . Thankfully I had a tube with me .

talk to me guys ..... what ya suggest , gotta be bullet proof .

thanks
Mike

I'm 205lbs. and ride the rear tire at 18-20 psi... Now, that is what the gauge on my 8 year old pump says🙂... With a steel ht and the tires set low it is plush... I use the Geax Seguro... Guys up north shit on em but my experience has been great with... The one time they went flat was at CR and i had the pressure to high... This was a cut in the tread though not the sidewalls

Spencer , I'm 220 . What I find is , even riding at 24 psi ,If I take a bit of air off a rock my rear tire tends to flatten out and then my landing gets very sketchy .

Ebineezer , where are you riding, what's your regular trails / terrain ?

I typically ride in the rocks ( ringwood, jungle, sprain ridge) but also enjoy places like Stewart. I have used Ardents, ignitors, and crossmarks, and have never had sidewall issues.

Another vote for maxxis. Try some with the exo casing. I've been running them with success in the northern Parks and a lot of others on the board have been as well. Im hard on my gear, I've broken 2 rear wheels this year but my tires are running strong.

yeah , that's what's so puzzling. My buddy has some crappy no name brand tires with no issues .

-1 on those heavy quick to wear geax. Short answer is none in 29er I know I have destroyed them all. WTB dissents at 1000g+ is the right answer otherwise they all suck. Currently on ardent front which I have sliced before and raven rear. Skinny guys don't count with any answers I am the same size as you and run 18psi F and 22psi R...

Stocky,

I have one WTB Stout 2.3 that is almost like new. The sidewalls are way heavier than the Ignitors that I'm running. Your welcome to it if you want to give it a try, it's heavy though.

Tim

another +1 for them.

But also look into the AKA TNT...i think they have better sidewalls...

Edit: oh, i should have mentioned that i'm skinny, so don't listen to me...

I should have also said south of 78 doesn't qualify either 😀...

obviously you ride more rocks than I do but I don't think my being 185 vs your being 220 has anything to do with how beefy a Geax TNT sidewall is... the pressure you are going to run as a result though is personal preference... again - nothing to do with the composition of the sidewall...

all I know is I have had the same tire for 1.5 seasons and not flatted or burped a tire once so the tire is a success for me...

if Matty has a better options for you then check it out... but don't discount a Geax TNT tire...

they are both TNT sidewalls... they should be the same...

Lou 99.9% of the trails I ride have 141 sidewall eating rocks per foot just like malhon so OP asked a question what 29er tire works in that area. Answer is big fat 0

I was speaking generally - forgot dude said strictly Mahlon ... its all good my man... either way you're far better versed in his options...

You guys are pretty damn funny .... Matty , I get your answer of " 0 " .

Jshort , any line at Mahlon has rocks : )

The Dissents that someone suggested are 2.5" wide , seems pretty fat and wide especially with the big nobbies . I'm not at all concerned about weight . More concerned with a tire that will handle well climbing ,and hold up to the rocks .
Speed is not my thing , Mahlon has its share of single track , but I really like to challenge myself on the technical stuff . Most of that involves rocks of some nature.

What did we put on that thing last time around? The Ignitor EXO may be a good bet, or at least the best bet you'll get. Another suggestion? I know it may seem counter-intuitive, but convert the wheelset back to tubes. The tube will give you an extra layer of rubber to support the sidewall of the tire. You'd also at that point be able to rub a thorn-proof tube which will get you the beefiest sidewall option out there.

Jim, I actually blew through the sidewall yesterday on the trail. Good thing I carry tubes with me . Believe it or not I changed the bitch in no time flat . You know me , if it breaks I bring it to you ... So right now there's a tube in the rear tire .

I think the current rear is a Specialized " The Captain" .

It's not so much the extra layer of protection with the tube as it is who's got the best sidewalls . I really have no problem going back to tubes , but not sure that's the issue .

What do ya think about the Dissents ?

You missed the point son. A tube will reinforce the sidewall. The Captain is just as beefy as the EXO Ignitor so that's not gonna help. I know what we need to do, hit me up.

-Jim.
