Garmin 205/305

If anyone is still on the fence about his gadget - wondering about speed and height accuracy or a weak gps signal then I'd still say get one. The training tool "Virtual Parter" is practically worth the dosh all by itself. I just beat myself again on the road by just shy of 20seconds over my normal 21.5mile after work loop. It's a very flat (read:windy), fast course - just 750ft of climbing but it's the best I've got for a weekday ride.

If I compare my now fastest time against my first loop then I'm over 5 minutes faster and my average speed is up by around 1.5mph to 18.9mph in just 3 months. All from chasing that little dot on the screen!

So, come on, $135 on eBay! Whatareyouwaitinfor?

comes in a mini-usb model which fits the garmin unit. there were very favorable reviews of it on motionbased, although it is not 100% safe, as there is no limiter on it. it works on AA batteries, so i should be able to have mb info for the entire 24hr of allamuchy. alternatively, i think the http://www.geoman.com version is cheaper right now. but this was right there as i was buying my lunch so i picked it up. i'll test it over the next few days to see how long it lasts. the way it works, is you hook it up to a fully charged unit, attatch the charger to your handelbars(it's really light), and it trickle charges while you use it. supposedly the lithium batteries will give up to 12 or so hours before they die and it switches over to the internal battery, which is supposed to last 12, but realistically more like 9-10. so at some point during the night/morning, i'll switch in two more AAs.

tons of info on battery charger packs for the 205/305 here: http://forums.motionbased.com/smf/index.php?topic=5519.0

from energizer re: water resistance

"Dear Mr. Grady,

Thank you for contacting Energizer and for your inquiry.

The Energi to Go is about as weather resistant as your average cell phone. In General, we recommend the Energi to Go not be exposed to water whenever possible. Protecting the Energi to Go with a plastic bag would be a good idea if a wet environment is expected.

Thank you for contacting Energizer. If you need further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us.

12 hrs of riding in and it's still going. the e2g cable got wet on the bike while on the rack of my truck, little bit of corrosion inside the plug. i blew into it strongly a few times, plugged it in and it worked like a champ. anyone doing a 24 hr race with a garmin SHOULD get one of these. fan-friggen-tastic. $20 at your local a&p or cvs.

I made myself a ghetto version using:

- AA Battery holder from Radio Shack $1.59
- Battery snap cable (9V) from Radio Shack $2.59 for pkg of 5
- An old USB cable lying around the house
- Shrink tubing

With 4 AA batteries, its 6 volts which is perfect for charging the GPS.

Its not for use while riding since it ain't waterproof, but it charges the Garmin while I rest. And I do plan to rest.
