Tariffs...what to make of them.

No problem here at all:

President trump spoke to The Atlantic about what was different from his first term as president, telling the reporters in a piece published on Monday that in his second term, he now runs the country "and the world."

"The first time, I had two things to do—run the country and survive; I had all these crooked guys," he told The Atlantic. "And the second time, I run the country and the world."

President Donald Trump made clear Sunday that he would not follow his predecessor’s practice of recognizing Indigenous Peoples Day alongside Columbus Day in October, accusing Democrats of denigrating the explorer’s legacy as he pressed his campaign to restore what he argues are traditional American icons.

Traditional American icons.....Who were Italian and never actually set foot in what would become the United States..

Indigenous Peoples Day. That is the Americas Holocaust over 100 million died over a 400 year period. That was in North, South and Central America. Also includes the Carribean islands. I was glad we did recognize it. Also I am Italian descent.

Well today they are...if you were to say ask Trump. But in the 1800s....they were considered pure scum. After the abolition of slavery, many Italians were brought in to work on farms and be exploited. So I did know that Columbus day as a holiday came as a direct response to the New Orleans lynchings of 1891....but that was about all I knew about it......my god, reading more about this....ESPECIALLY the the political repercussions.....

Political repercussions

The incident strained relations between the United States and Italy. The Italian consul Pasquale Corte left New Orleans in late May 1891 and the New York Times published his statement accusing the city politicians of responsibility for the lynchings. The Italian government demanded that the lynch mob be brought to justice and that reparations be paid to the dead men's families. When the US declined to prosecute the mob leaders, Italy recalled its ambassador from Washington in protest. The US followed suit, recalling its legation from Rome. Diplomatic relations remained at an impasse for over a year, and there were rumors of a declaration of war on America as a result of the murders. As part of a wider effort to ease tensions with Italy and placate Italian Americans, President Benjamin Harrison declared the first nationwide celebration of Columbus Day in 1892, commemorating the 400th anniversary of the Italian explorer's landing in the New World

And I get this coming from an italian family, Columbus was a hero to my grandparents....more to the point that long ago, Italians were considered the garbage of Europe....and the response to that was "Hey, an Italian discovered America"......The truth about what Columbus did was really not the point....although IMO...if I was talking to my grandparents today...I would like to tell them..it SHOULD be the point.

I have to say....read thru this page....then just replace Italians with MS-13 gang members or which ever brown people Trump currently has his ire directed at. Henry Cabot Lodge after the Lynching: "the paupers and criminals of Europe" were "pouring into the United States" and proposed a literacy test to weed out the least desirable immigrants.
