Go to the Chat popup in the lower right, then select Settings. You can select Go Offline.

I believe this will keep people from trying to Chat with you. Not sure though. I haven't used it.

Yes, it renders you invisible. I use it all the time. Once you turn it on it stays that way until you set yourself back to online. So you don't need to do it each time.
