Going Long and Hard.

Volunteer Day at Skylands Animal Sanctuary today. It’s like trail maintenance but with poop.

Knob Gobbler.

This race was surprisingly fun, and hard.

Started sort of near the front, I knew being on Pinky I was gonna get dropped during the Start against geared Gravel Bikes. And I sure did. Spent the first few miles going backwards through the field completely spun out. Then we started hitting the climbs and brutal headwinds and I began to go forward through the field. Came out of Lap 1 in 27th.

Laps 2 and 3 I didn’t make up any ground and thought this was it for me today, at this point I had a good lead on 2nd place SS. I took my first pit to swap bottles going into Lap 4. I also stripped my LS off because I was cooking.

Lap 4 I was finally warmed up and picked up the pace a lot, the climbs were effortless and I started picking off the geared guys.

Lap 5 I caught the front of the MTB Field and sat in to hide from the wind and wait for the time to go all in. Back half of the course had a few punchy climbs into the wind followed by some long open sections so that’s where I went for it. Rode 3 guys off my wheel and just buried myself to make it stick.

Lap 6 I really quickly grabbed new bottles so I could go all in the next 2 laps without worrying about fuel. I could see the 3 guys in sections of the course chasing but it looked like my gap was holding. Climbing into the wind was starting to sting a little but I kept the pace.

Lap 7 I kept pushing. Same pace. Just on autopilot. Taking in the views. And done.

Good day. Was running a 32x17 but easily could’ve ridden a 15t.

Won the SS Class by a Lap.
Won Overall MTB by 2-minutes.
Came in 12th Overall Overall.

These dudes put on a solid event, glad I took the 15 minute drive out there 😂

I took zero pictures because there were photographers everywhere. Will post those when they post them and then I’ll post that post to this post, post this post.

Great job. Proving that SS is faster? Was that course through a bunch of landfills or former landfills?

Yeah, place is a dump. Was a dump? IDK how Landfills work.
If I wasn’t already committed to go somewhere else I would have went too and been one of the people you blew past on a gravel bike.

I grew up in SI and I can’t believe they made that a park after it being the worlds largest dumping ground for dozens of years. The stench used to be soooo bad.

After it closed they spent years covering it and making a methane plant or something to burn it all off.

It’s been a park for 3ish years now I’m told but they haven’t gotten the OK to open it to the public yet. The front part of it is super nice with facilities and a big lookout tower thing to see into the marsh and look at birds and shit.

Being a former dump they can't build homes or businesses on top. The only option is the cap it well, throw fill dirt on top then call it a park. If it's special you get to call it a Trump golf course.
