Things that make you go Wow 😲

Speaking of WOW things and school, has anyone elses kids mentioned the up tick in anti Semitism? We live in a primarily white district, something like 75%. There is a decent size jewish population, my family included. During rec basketball this year, my son plays on a team that has 4 Jewish kids in our neighborhood and both of the coaches are jewish. First game of the season some kid call my son a kike, and a fight almost breaks out. The coaches make an issue of it to the head of the league, who is African American. It quickly turned into a "it isn't as bad as the N word" discussion and was brushed off. On the heels of that we asked our son how often does this happen to which he responded, daily. OK, lets dig deeper here, come to find out that is quite and issue and multiple kids have suspended for jewish hate speech, which basically does nothing. A few jewish girls we know in the school pretty much stated it is horrible to even come to school.

The war didn't help this, but at the end of the day, this is really an issue? And then you have the protest last year, making it a topic of conversation with looking for colleges for my son. WOW.
I didnt comment on this when you posted as I wasnt near a computer all weekend....but that is really unfortunate. You would think that kids are doing this just because its "a thing" that they know can hurt people....pretty sad regardless.
Are we, people, that bored and insane? YES

wow indeed....I watched 10 seconds of this to see what it was....Now thats fucking stupid. Thankfully its not getting many views....restoring my faith in humanity slightly.

I'm not sure that it's really an uptick. To me, it's always been around. I have never figured out why, nor understood, but for some reason in a lot of social circles, it seems totally ok to shit on the jews. I'm 55, I'm a white guy, raised catholic and grew up in a town that was 99.9% white. There were plenty of Jewish kids in our "friend group", I went to a few bar mitzvah's, but nobody had a problem shitting on Jewish people. Even now, playing golf or being around some of the people I grew up with, they really have no problem saying some shit that doesn't need to be repeated here. It's just weird, it's like the last group thats its ok to fuck with?? Sorry your kids have to go thru that shit.

The weirdest part of it all, can you name another race that has contributed so much? Every hospital, cancer center, etc.. has some wing donated by a Jewish family. Every heard of the polio vaccine, Jewish guy! I've never really understood the disdain and downright hate that gets placed on jewish people. But it's there, people love to hate.

My friend was at Berkeley in May for a college visit with his daughter, some kid ran up to him and said he had the blood of Palestine on his hands. WTF? Weird times.

Seems like there's definitely an uptick at least in colleges. Israel's treatment of Gaza being so forward on the international stage is something college kids can now run with. So regular Jews get lumped in with the Israeli government's actions in Gaza.

I never really saw antisemitism in grade school, but that may just be regional as I I grew up mostly in East Hanover/Whippany yet heard more anti-antisemitism in Madison/Chatham/West Orange. I remember it being a big deal with anti-Semitic chants when Livingston was playing Madison in games.

Since my kids are much older, and have been raised Catholic, (while I am Jewish) i haven't been hearing much about this aside from a few casual mentions from my youngest son (17) starting his senior year in Sept.

I grew up in a time when it was cool to be anti-semite somehow and unfortunately we lived in a neighborhood in Staten Island where the #1 goal of most of the folks was to weaponize being Jewish as a form of entertainment, harassment, vandalism and anything else you can imagine. I won't go into the specifics because honestly it was a dark period of my life for me and my family that I try to not reflect on too much, but the recent events certainly have me triggered a bit.

@stb222 thats too bad for your kids that they have to experience this, but hopefully you can rally around them with the community and navigate them through it.

Funny, I lived in Park City utah from age 12-18....My school only had three Jewish kids that I recall....never can recall anti-semitism....even in an area that was very Christian. I dont recall Mormons being anti anyone...(anecdotal experience) Moreso in my younger years growing up in NJ....But I never grew up with religion...while my parents were Catholics and I was baptized...we never went to church, my father thought it was all a giant crock....So I remember having no understanding of why people didnt like Jews for a very long time.....actually now that im an adult and I know about the new testament, and Matthew blah blah blah....I still find it hard to believe that this nonsense gets passed down thru generations.

I can remember being seven years old and going to the YMCA in Passaic to learn to swim and just have fun.
At pool side a fellow my age came up to me and stated "no one will be my friend because I'm Jewish".
Seemed weird to me, he seemed like a regular guy. I said "I'll be your friend, lets go swim". I didn't really understand it.

Now a days I'm surprised the Palestine's are so tolerated in this country, weren't they the ones dancing in the streets just after 911, why are they even hear if they hate us.

I know from what I see from my son at 24, a lot of it comes from how they get their news. All the social media platforms are filled with pro Palestinian, anti-Israel content. Even being Jewish he is way too pro Palestinian for us post 10/7. We don't think he gets the fact that the people he would like to protect would want him as a Jew, eliminated.

Pretty ironic, being that Jesus was a Jew from Palestine.

Went catholic school and then a evangelistic church. Now I am Agnostic. I really think that the worlds religions cause more problems and killings and war.
"Can't we just get a long and ride bikes." Give me a hell yeah for dirt church!!!!!!!!
Maybe back in the middle ages, but which world religion is causing killings and war now?

i read it as religions in general (not any specific one) are the cause of way too much killing and war, but then words arent my strong suite so . . . .
You read it right. And there was a time in our history when wars were fought in the name of religion. I'm just curious as to which religions are actually causing war and killing in 2024. Its a bit of a loaded question also because people like to lump all religion together when they discuss these things. Shit we talked politics, guns, now its religion's turn, the trifecta of things that are not to be discussed.

Ya, I mean the Jews and the Muslims in the middle east....they really just dislike each other based on the their favorite bike brands......most likely a Specialized vs Trek thing
Yes and no. They're fighting over land and territory right now (and no, they never really liked each other, but that also goes back to the land and territory thing). And you forgot about Giant. They're the ninjas of the bike world.

does it actually have to be war tho? people insert their religious beliefs into everything. for a country founded on religious freedoms and the separation of church and state, we sure as hell ain't doing a good job of leaving god out of our government.
