James Pearl Thinks Blogging is Dead

February 20: Being Sick

Many years ago, I shared a house with some people who sort of loved being sick. It gave them the excuse to lay in bed and watch TV all day. They would often be sick, and they clearly liked it. Obviously, I'm not sure they were really sick. I think they just wanted an excuse to be lazy. And yes, they got "sick" a fair amount.

I, on the other hand, freaking hate it. I hate everything about it and wish all colds would die a horrible death and cease to exist. At least for me. While I am a solid 90% better now, it's still annoying and obnoxious and I have a gallon and a half of phlegm trying to escape my body by any means possible. It is truly dreadful.

I got on the bike tonight anyway, and it felt great. I had a solid workout even if I had to hack up phlegm 97 times during the ride. I'm over halfway done with the final season of the Sopranos, so we're really getting into drive time here. After I post this, I'm going upstairs to fold my laundry, stretch, and watch some more. I don't even need an excuse to watch, I just want to.

Anyway, fuck sick. And here's a Primanti Brothers sandwich from this past weekend.

I also hate being sick side note iv been dealing with some lingering cold/flu garbage for like 2 weeks now wife unit seems to have brought it home from work.

Agree fuck sick

I hate being sick as well. I do multivitamins, vitamin D, and some other stuff. When I very it coming on I use this quicksilver immunity boost stuff.

I don’t know if it really works, but placebo is real.

Zinc seems to help when catching it early.
Also run a humidifier in the bedroom, the inside air is brutally dry this time of year.

I'm snotting like a champ the last two days.

I am the worst sick person because I can't function when I am sick. Forget missing out on riding or exercising, all I can manage is to lay in bed or the recliner and complain a lot.

even though I tested negative 2 times, back in December I had pretty much the same symptoms as COVID for 2+ weeks between Thanksgiving and Xmas.

We all take multi-vitamins , Airborne, etc.. every night at dinner but sometimes there's no way to dodge it.

Get better soon Norm.

If you're able to eat a sandwich like that and taste it, you aint sick. Hell, i cant chew and breathe without choking....

I woke up this morning with my right eye welded shut with some sort of goop....when I asked my wife wtf is this nonsense, she told me about how she got pick eye at work...and I guess gave it to me now. Awesome.....But thankfully I could still taste my coffee, so according to Dr @pibbles im not sick. whew.

And I have the same phlegm stuff going on right now....post nasal drip whatever....lovely.

February 21: Transportation Infrastructure

It sucks. We have very little transportation infrastructure in this country. I'm sure it's because the place is too big. But unless you want to go from massive hub to massive hub, you're sunk. We are a car country, and there's not much you can do about it.

I'm looking to rent a car Sunday, locally, then drive it to Providence (ish) where I will return it somewhere else. The best I can find is around $600 to rent it from Friday to Monday. I could go to Newark airport, sit in line for an hour, then drive to Providence airport. But that seems insane. The time investment for that is absurd. Local car rental is not really a thing, especially not 1-way.

Why? Does it matter? I'm meeting the family up in Boston at the end of next week's work trip. We don't want to have 2 cars. So I want to get myself up there, meet up with them, then drive home the following Sunday. But man, it's not even remotely affordable.

I'm taking Amtrak. I've never taken an Amtrak train, so I'm kinda excited for this. Hopefully it doesn't suck. Does it suck? I paid for business class because that org with all the JD Power Awards is springing for it. I will also rent a horse-drawn carriage to bring me to my hotel Sunday night. Still, it's less than half the cost of a car rental.

I didn't take any pictures today. So here's my dog from Xmas.

I've done it to DC a few times, most recently in late 2019. It's not bad really, pretty similar to taking an NJT train anywhere but a bit nicer inside. I was able to get work done on my laptop, though I can't recall if it's more/less smooth than flying in that regard. Certainly a bit more roomy than a plane seat.

But, that was in the before times. Now you probably have to tip someone to take your ticket.

On the previous post, it sure is a drag to be around people who pull you down with them (intentionally or not). It seems to be an inevitability when someone is thriving in the negative, however that manifests itself. This seems to tie in a bit with the work post last week where a single negative person can bring the group down. Its takes a surprising amount of effort to keep your head in the right space in that environment.

Please tell me you paid for the Acela.

I've been happy with Amtrak the couple times I've taken them, what's annoying is having to basically get into NYC for it.

Acela was sold out for when I wanted to go.

I am picking it up in Metro Park, ~30 minutes away. I could also go to Newark...but Newark.

Have done the Acela Newark to Boston few times, not the worst. Local tin can, close to the worst, still probably better than local rental car nightmare and EWR rental car nightmare.

The Amtrak between DC and Boston is actually a very nice way to go. Faster than driving, much less hassle than flying. It's usually smooth and quiet and they have Wifi. Bon Voyage!

February 22: Winter Travel

I don't do as well with winter work travel as I do with non-winter work travel. When it's not cold & sloppy out, I bring my bike and make the best of it. I will gladly get up at 5am to get a 2 hour ride in and still make it to the client by 9am. One of the primary reasons it would be hard to leave this job is because I can pretty much travel with my bike most of the time. When it's winter, that's not the case.

It's become clear that my sciatica issue is made better when I ride. So when I was sick, it got worse. When I was in Rhode Island the first time, it got worse. These places have gyms, sure. But they generally suck. I stay at Hiltons now, and I have seen more and more of them have Peloton bikes. Even the shit box hotel that locked up the yogurt fridge had a Peloton. I haven't tried it yet, but it claims you can get a guest account to ride. I've been hesitant because I feel like you'll get 1 free ride then they'll ask for your credit card. My coworker says you can hook people up as a user on an account if you have one, but I have not looked into doing that. Maybe this next trip.

So I'll be away again next week and I'm a little worried about getting my shit together in these hotel gyms. For the time being, I'm done with lifting weights. That shit has been nothing but back & hip pain and it's just not something I need to worry about. But I do need to get some aerobic work in, especially when I'm going to be eating out for 13 straight meals next week. After that, we'll roll right into a volleyball tournament in Boston so it's only going to extend to like 22 straight meals by the end of the week. That's a lot of not ideal eating.

Anyway, tonight was game night.

Every hotel I've stayed in gives guests the ability to use the Peloton without having to register for an account with a user name and password right on the bike. PowerZone classes are probably your best bet. PowerZone Endurance" are Zones 2/3 PowerZone throws in some Z4-Z6 with Z1 recoveries. I try to only stay in hotels that have a Peloton these days when traveling for work

The Hilton chain seems to have bought into the Peloton thing. Perhaps Paris is a fan.

Thanks for the info!
