First aid kit while riding

I rode with a group ride today and one of my good friends son had a hand injury. He was a trooper while I’m sure the effect made him worried.

We were lucky enough to have some of the MTBNJ crew come by. Thankful for @Glenn Rides After 4 PM CST having some gauze, a bandage and some disinfectant. Thankful for @Norm and his calmness with the boy.

It makes me come to this post.

What type of emergency pack do you carry? What haven’t you carried that you felt you needed?

I owe you Glenn, thank you!

Btw, good seeing you too Dan, @Dominique And others.
Funny.... @Glenn Rides After 4 PM CST bandaged me up too lol hope the boy ok

Another thing in my Osprey FAK is two opiods in a waterproof container. If you break a few bones, pain treatment can be hours away and after the adrenaline wears off.

For about five years, I also included a MaxiPad before realizing that arterial bleeds are quite rare.

Take a wilderness first aid class offered by nynjtc. Great course gives you basic knowledge when help is more than an hour away. If anything you learn what not to do. It was a weekend course.

After the last couple of injuries/issues I have gone from bringing nothing to packing Advil, Benadryl, eye rinse and spare contact lenses. I also have an albuterol inhaler in my bag- highly recommend.
Thinking about bring an instant ice pack, but so bulky. I may keep one in the car.

just curious what everyone uses to carry their first aid kits in.

i use a small plastic bag but i wonder if there's a better option. i like the fact my bag is pretty compact (size of my hand)

I'm the full-on trauma guy lol. Seriously though, I'm a ED/Trauma RN, so I have stuff some won't.

Stop the bleed kit:
C-A-T® tourniquet
Celox® 5' Hemostatic Gauze Dressing
4 in. Responder Flat Dressing

Wound adhesive
Survival blanket
Saline flushes
IM meds (Benadryl, dexamethasone, ketorolac, epinephrine)
PO meds (Aspirin, Powdered Pepto, Benadryl)
Tough Strip bandaids
Bacitracin
Alcohol pads
Exam gloves

Loadout also includes a pocket knife, flashlight, multi tool, Silky, windbreaker, hand warmers, snaplight.

FAK in the truck has a bit more for wound management, plus some other stuff. Also have supplies to start IV, as well as suture kit (zombie apocalypse, not trying to ever use that lol).
So I find this funny as I am married to an ED RN....Not only does she never carry anything on her/car etc...The only stuff we have in our house I had to go out and buy

I carry nothing on me to fix humans, only bikes....but I wont argue that its probably a good idea to do so. I rolled over a sharp stick a few years ago and received a pretty big puncture wound in my side....My stans dart was unable to seal it.

Yea, there's a lot that goes into why I do it, but I'm definitely an outlier I think.

For years i've carried some model FA kit from Adventure Medical--they really have a kit for everything from simple pouch of band aids to guide and family kits. Back when riding moto/dusl sport, a larger kit in my back pack, but they even offer a couple very minimalistic, ultra light kits for carrying in waist packs or frame bags. Also keep a larger, more fully featured kit in the vehicles. Fortunately never needed anything more than various bandages although there is suture supplies in the truck if anyone needs to go full Rambo. 😂

I purchased a few 4"x6"x1" plastic boxes on Amazon and stuffed them with items I had lying around the house. I keep one in each car and I throw it in my backpack for the more rowdy rides or hikes. It came in handy this weekend when I helped a guy who cut his finger pretty badly.

  • Paper towel
  • Gloves
  • Misc bandages
  • Misc gauze pads
  • Alcohol wipes
  • Burn cream
  • Hand sanitizer gel
  • Tape
  • Mini Scissors
  • Mini tweezers
  • Neosporin
  • Safety pins and a razor blade (for blisters)
  • Krazy glue
  • Benadryl
  • Ibuprofen
  • 2 types of finger splints (I added those after recently rupturing a tendon in my finger)

Replace the burn cream with lidocaine wipes. Less mess. You're not going to get burns riding a bicycle, hopefully.

Also, swabs/wipes when possible. Bad juju to touch any kind of wound.
