“I’m not doing this stupid race again!” I think I said that 366 days ago and 731 days ago! Well I made it through cathedral pines and came in 2nd in ss open. 7 laps. The first three laps were kind of a greasy swamp and quite power robbing. My pace was good for 8 but after going back and forth with my buddy Jeff M I dumped it in the muck at the end of lap 3. Well I got up and kinda lost touch and lap 4 hit me like Mike Tyson. My stomach was in knots and I started upheaving. I ate a skratch bar and it didn’t help. End of lap 4 I had @pooriggy dump three more bottles in my camlbak(70oz) and I ate a stroupe waffle and downed a salt pill and 4 endurolytes. Lap 5 was miserable and beginning of lap six I started to come around. I only had a water bottle as I consumed 140oz previously. For the 7th lap I borrowed a bottle from @Mitch and that felt like my best lap. I wanted 8 but ended up coming in at 6:08 so no go. Anyways, I ran. 34/18 and with the exception of a bonk/GI issue I felt great. My back was great, no numb hands and I survived 6 hours of CP. I really wanted to quit on lap 5 after becoming delirious and losing focus. This is a win for me.

Well, racing season is almost over! This was a long one. Started in january with the fat 50 and ends next sunday after the Frederick, MD Turkey Trot 5k and the Navesink Challenge 15k...whew! I’ll finish this season at 20 races. Now on to the base building.

Went to visit the inlaws in Frederick, MD today. We all went out for the annual Turkey Trot 5K. I haven't done a 5K race in 3 years and only one or two others before that. I did run XC in high school but that was a 1/2 assed venture. Anyways, I did some one effort on the road bike last night as my opener and had some IPAs last night to top off the tank.

Race day. Woke up at 7:00 and drove 10 minutes to the destination. 26 degrees is great 5k weather haha. Anywys, I took off with the lead group and immediately new a 5:30 pace was recipe for disaster. I backed it off and ended up running a 6:59, 7:23 and 7:17 with last part at 6:30 pace. This was a PR for me as I finished in 22:22. Not fast by running standards but I am a gimpy old MTB racer. 128 of 3200 racers. On to the Navesink Challenge 15K on Sunday.

I know I'm a bit different than most but man I can't get enough training and racing in. I love it!

Well, 2018 is a wrap. I went out and did a quickie road ride in the wet this morning to "open" em up. Orange Seal saved the day when I punctured the front but it sealed at about 70ish psi. After that I went down to Bodman Park for the navesink Challenge 15K. I felt really good and ran an 8:02 average for 9ish miles. This is a big step for me as I had a hard time finishing a 9 mile run 2 years ago and today I was able to make my fastest split on the last mile. I finished like 100ish out of 600 finishers and 1100 that signed up. Well that's it for 2018...back to leg days in the gym.

I spent Xmas up in Franklin, NH with my older bro and his fam. Took the bro for a ride and got him wanting a nee mtb( he is retured state police and active Marine Corps suffering from PTSD. He really enjoyed the riding. Did some geared mtb stuff on the road and some trails. It seems my holiday peak weight goes down a bit each year. The last four years kunda went like this...234, 217, 208 and now I barely hit 200 the other day. That’s it. This will be a good year.

I did an ftp test friday and was happy to be 21 watts up from this time last year. I am avoiding the gym this year and going to try and max my self on the bike and do my workouts at home so I can be more efficient and close to the growing family. I purchased a Concept 2 Skierg and a Kickr Core. I’ve also been doing my rides from home as driving to the park wastes valuable training time.

Yesterday I met up at Hartshorne with @pooriggy and Charles Gomez joined in. Always a good time riding with Chris. Today
Is my ride of 2018. Gonna ride Ringwood today and it’s snowing. SS and rigid should be fun as always.

Cheers and happy New Year to all.

Yo dudes! Race season is coming fast! I've been going full speed(picture a rock garden where you can't see the end). 3 kids is a ton of work but at the same time it's so worth it. I'm gonna start by saying my wife Andrea is a saint. We've been together almost 15 years and she supports me in everything I do. Oh, and she's a badass stay at home mom.

2018 was bitter sweet but in reality it turned out to be my best year fitness wise. I'm hoping 2019 is even better. I am in Freehold for jury duty today, tomorrow and wednesday but at the same time I'm trying to cram in workouts, spend time with the family and do side work. I'm hoping to use the wisdom from Frank Oreilly when he told me he got faster after each kid he had. Ha, we will see. This past weekend the team hammered out a nice 50 mile gravel grinder. So fun.

Beer season is mostly over(wine is the new beer). I've been trying to get about 10 hours a week in but soon I'll be upping it to 12 or so. A combination of running/riding z2 is helping my overall fitness. I'm doing some ftp intervals as we speak but next month will be the hard stuff. I did Marty's Fat 50 and felt great but now it's time to improve. I did a bit of gym work but ultimately bought a Concept 2 skierg and have been doing that and some core workouts at home. @pooriggy once told me a happy wife is a happy life...I think.

So this weekend I'll be riding a lot of hartshorne with @BrianGT3 for his Bday. After that we'll just be looking forward to short track in march as well as mayhem, hoh and the Stoopid 50. Let's make 19 a great year. Thanks to all the members of Team HB Hilltop Offroad for keeping it fun. @xc62701 @Sven Migot @alanv etc. Cheers.
