I will agree and disagree. Riding a lot of hours will definitely increase fitness with little to no structure, just riding. I haven't been on a training plan in years and my FTP is just the same as when I was paying for a coach. Ride a lot. Agree.

Disagree on the gym. Strength training is absolutely essential. The weight you put on your hands will effect every part of your off-road experience. Strong core keeps the hands light and hips straight. Power gets delivered straight to the ground. Dead lifts. Squats. Planks. Push-ups. Sit-ups. Do it all.
