Tooth Pain!!!

So.... I paid lots of money to have a root canal done by a "specialist" over 3 years ago and yesterday I had to have the tooth extracted. For those of you that have been fortunate enough to never have had a tooth get infected, you have no idea the level of pain I experienced Monday.... So Sunday night I started to experience the familiar discomfort of an infected root canal, some mild pain and discomfort. Knowing full well what I was in store for over the next few days, first thing Monday morning, I made a dentist appointment for Tuesday afternoon. Well this pain progressively got worse Monday to the point I wound up waking up at 3am and going to the local emergency room begging for pain killers like some junkie...The doctor gave me an antibiotic to start immediately as well as some Percocet to help with the pain. The Percocets only take the edge off for about an hour and a half tops..And I was burning a hole in my stomach with 800mg Ibuprofen...ugg..
Let me say this, I am no stranger to pain, I have broken a knee, tore a bicep muscle off, blew a hamstring, had 2 shoulder surgeries, stomach surgery and a vasectomy, so Im familiar with pain and by no means a sissy. However, this pain I would never wish upon my worst enemy, you simply cant get comfortable and it radiates through your entire head...
Tuesday afternoon couldnt come fast enough, I walked in the dentist office and said Doc, please inject me with something asap. He laughed and promply gave me a shot in the gum which barely took the pain away. We did X rays and saw that the tooth had somehow fractured under the gum line and had to be extracted. The infection was so bad that even after 3 shots I was still feeling pain as he was extracting the tooth...Im feeling much better now and will be doing a dental bridge to replace that tooth once it all heals up...Thanks for listening to me vent..lol

On the bright side, Im lighter by whatever the weight of a tooth is..hahahah

Ah, root canals are always a source of discussion with my wife. Apparently if not dealt with properly they may be a source for nasty infections. Sorry to hear about your troubles, and glad it's over.

Curious though, if you had a root canal done on that tooth how could you still feel the pain ? I am assuming the 'specialist' didn't do a proper job ?

Bummer, I've spent lots of time in dentist chairs. If it was a molar with multiple roots, sometimes they miss one during a root canal - this happened to me a few years ago. Had to get the "extra" root canaled and pain was gone. Fractured tooth is a different story - fracture allowed bacteria to get into the tooth socket.

PS bridge will weigh twice as much as the tooth!

the pain was the infection between the tooth and the gum building up pressure....

Is an implant an option as opposed to a bridge? I'm sure it's more expensive but I wonder if overall it would be better?

Takes much longer (once an implant is put in you go several months for the bone to heal around it) plus more trauma. I've had a bridge on my upper incisors that has lasted over 20 years so far. Had some stupid hockey/fooling around accidents as a kid

That ain't shit. Try an impacted kidney stone for a couple of days, with nausea and puking thrown in for good measure. If you've ever watched Deadwood on HBO (if you haven't, I recommend binging it), Al's throw-down with the stones about sums it up.

Do you have issues with food getting stuck under the bridge? Is it any different than having caps?

ouch - i split a tooth in the plane aligned with the gum - they took an xray and didn't see anything!
so yeah, it hurt, and didn't get that far along. there was some weird reason they could take most of it out,
and put a cap on.

glad ya got some relief.
