June 6, 1878, John P. Holland of Paterson tested his first submarine design in the Passaic River.
Holland was an Irish-born inventor and educator. He emigrated to the United States in 1873.
The submarine dove to a depth of 12 feet. The maximum speed was about 3-1/2 miles per hour.
After an exhaustive series of tests, Holland removed everything of value and left the hull in the
Upper Passaic River above the Spruce Street Bridge. It was recovered in 1927 and presented to
The Paterson Museum, where it is on display.

The first patent for the drive-in theatre was issued on May 16, 1933. With an investment of $30,000,
Richard Hollingshead opened the first drive-in June 6, 1933 on Admiral Wilson Boulevard, Pennsauken
Township, NewJersey, just over the border from Camden. The price of admission was 25 cents for the car
and 25 cents per person. Prior to opening the drive-in, Richard experimented in his own driveway at 212
Thomas Avenue, Riverton. He mounted a 1928 Kodak projector on the hood of his car, projected onto a
screen he had nailed to trees in his backyard, and used a radio placed behind the screen for sound.
