So i completed @jdog 's 31/31 challenge... i thought i'd post a few notes about the experience:

  • my legs are sore. (duh.) normally i mix things up a bit (biking, running, yoga mostly) to let the muscles move in different ways. 31 days (and counting) of steady biking and i think some of my leg muscles are going to snap.
  • i got bored. i tried to get to different areas to ride, but because of my schedule and weather restrictions, i did way more riding around morristown/madison than i'd like.
  • i realize i don't push myself enough. i'm way slower when i'm by myself, but when i have someone pushing me or some sort of "carrot" in front of me, i get PRs and strava trophies all of a sudden.
  • i hate road riding. i had to hop in the road a few times and i realized that even when there aren't a lot of cars around, i don't want to be sucking down exhaust fumes and dealing with city people. i have way more fun with all the challenges mountain biking brings... all the sights and smells of the woods... the escape from the hustle of normal life.
  • i LOVE my bike. i want to ride it all the time. i've even been considering selling my road bike and making the HT a SS (for the challenge) but the bike i REALLY want to ride regardless of where i'm riding is that 5010.
  • and since everyone loves a potty mouth: oh hell yeah... bikes! fuck yeah! ;)

Good shit Joy. A+ for Strava titles.
they're actually double named... the names above reference the real strava names if you click thru the link. (a few, unfortunately, are not as creative as others... they can't all be winners.)

Congratulations Joy. Way to hang in there! It's a super good accomplishment!

I tried to do my own little streak (got to 15 days) but got derailed by a migraine (can't say I was too disappointed to stop... my legs needed a break!)

I made it for them to post on FB while I'm away on vacation... My reception is spotty here and I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to post my usual weekend ride contribution on time... So I sent them everything I had early.

So I have some work waiting for me in my inbox and I still have to do some updates for the what's happening this weekend thread... but I just wanted to share some cool info I just learned about the race I'm doing this weekend: Girls Guts Glory

  • The woman who came up with the name for the race is on the team that just developed the first gene therapy to ever be approved in the US for childhood cancer. (When I find out more about who she is and what she does, I'll update this.)
  • The logo and all the promotional materials were designed by (you guessed it) a woman.
  • The name of the race is meant to be all inclusive... meaning women of ALL ages: young and less young.
Why am I mentioning this? Because it was brought to my attention that some people were bothered by the name of the race. And I get that. It's hard enough sometimes to be taken seriously as a woman and a woman racer and the last thing you want is a race promoter calling an adult woman "girl"... but there's more to this race and to the name and what's behind it.

So even if you're not racing, come support those of us who are... support the women behind the race... and support the Mental Health Assoc of Morris County (which is the beneficiary of the donations from this race)...

RACE RECAP!!!!!!!

Girls, Guts, Glory (run/bike/run @ lewis morris)

The numbers for the race were a little low (unfortunately they've been low all three years), but there were some nice last minute registrations to make for a competitive race Sunday.

so going in to the race i knew the podium was going to have these three ladies: Serena (Mrs. @Matt_ ), @Dominique and @sarcaro ... so i was thinking i'd be in the fourth or fifth place position with any luck. it rained pretty heavily saturday night (apparently it was fairly local to morristown because OF COURSE) so the trails were a little slick and it was pretty humid... i don't do well in the humidity. sigh.

whatever... i'm here to have fun and kick some ass... even if it's my own ass i'm kicking.

first run... serena's off on her own from pretty much the start. my race carrot is fucking fast. but i'm in the front of the pack. this never happens! woot! it's a little rough starting off but i'm doing pretty well especially considering the last couple of runs i did were road runs and definitely slow for me. it's a mile and a half which isn't an issue and i don't trip over myself and i have a nice little pace going and i make it back to the transition before dominique and steph... FUCK YEAH! they're going to kick my ass on the ride but it feels good to at least get thru one section ahead of someone! :)

transition to bike: oh boy. i can see why people practice this shit. i'm also running flat pedals on the bike now now so i have to add extra time to tie my bike shoes (instead of velcro). i was thinking of also using the trail running shoes for the ride portion but i realized really quickly in parking lot that that was a very bad idea. i get all my gear on and then head off... but dominique and steph quickly catch up to me. well, being ahead of them for a moment was fun.

biking... i'm slow on the uphills... i really need to work on that... sometimes i feel like when i do casual rides, i can totally kick ass on the hills but then i do a race and i realize i suck ass on hills... and part of it is because i get to stop and catch my breath on casual rides (duh). i really need to work on my fitness level. anyway, steph sticks with me for a little bit on the ride but she's on SS and can't go too slow on hills.... so she heads off. i do my thing and i pass someone else on the course... i do my two laps as best i can and head back to the transition area for run 2. it's easier to strip the bike stuff off and toss my running shoes on.

second run... it's hard getting my legs back and i have to walk/run/walk/run for a little up the fire road but i catch my breath and work out a side stitch and i run the rest of the way back... i get lots of cheers from the finishers and spectators... and i'm able to refrain from projectile vomiting. WIN!

so i did wind up fourth place in the individual category. i think i'm getting pretty used to this position. if i'm going to lose to people, at least it's people like steph and d and serena... they're supportive and encouraging and they give me a goal to strive for.

bonus: so we finally gather around by the podium for awards, but before they hand out awards, they announce they have a special mention award... FOR ME! i'm the only woman who's done the race all three years (and it was my birthday weekend) :) so i thought that was really awesome of rod to mention that. and serena's daughters gave me some of their flowers for my birthday... so i got a little bouquet too! (i like getting flowers sometimes... ahem... @Santapez just sayin')

my award: i wonder if i can put a little orange and blue jersey on it ;)
