MARTYCROSS - Races 15, 16 & 17 - Chester, NJ
Going into last weekend I was predicted by the machines to win three races and finish DFL in one. After barrier- pocalypse 2015 the machine was unpleased, but still had me predicted to win two more the following day.
I woke up Sunday morning feeling pretty good. I had really wanted to make it to the venue at 9 to catch the first race and yell at
@MadisonDan but I really couldnt rally myself to lug
two bikes and my race bag downstairs on time. I hit longfellows for a sub, CVS for a gallon, and Jersey Boy for a bagel then drove up to the venue.
Since
@Dutch Frog flatted he was in need of his front clincher which happened to be in my SS. With the rain overnight I decided to try jamming my disc tubular mud wheels into the frame. The back end spread easily accommodating the 135mm hub. I needed to remove my front rotor to clear the fork, but that was no issue with
@Norm's tool kit. My next concern was all the glue on the side walls which turned out to be no real issue! Nice. 27.5 PSI F/R and it was riding like a dream! Almost.
Next issue, my saddle nosed up on me preriding, which was a known issue with that back dating back to SSCXWC Philly. I studder stepped my mounts then horked the post topper nuts as much as I could without snapping the bolt. IT HELD! I could now pedal seated. woot.
My first race would be the SS race at 1:45. Around 11 I tried to put down my whole sub but only managed half. My stomach was feeling pretty tender and didn't want anymore food. Damn. I also choked down all of the water I could with scratch. It was going to be a long 3 races and hydration was a concern. I had a bag of peanut M&M's for between races and a Gatorade.
The SS field was only 12 guys and we were set off a minute after the Masterz. We would get to chase
@Norm and
@Superfly100guy.
WHISTLE
I missed my pedal and watched zach just absolutely ride away. I got on my teammate Tyler's wheel and we spun down the hill. Ty is the SS specialist of the team. All SS all the time. He's currently ranked 4th in the Zanccannato SS Series, only 12 points down from 3rd.
The race goes mostly like this: I connect with Zach on one of the climbs and we ride together for a couple laps. I predicted we would try and kill each other this race and we basically did. The race would end up being only 5 laps which was a good thing because the noises I was making up those hills were alarming. I was counting down the climbs each lap which consisted of what I would call 3 efforts. I started to put a little space on Z-mang with 2 to go and attacked pretty hard. I stayed on the effort out of fear of being caught and held it to the line for first. My best Heisman over the line:
I went right to swap bikes, drink and eat. AND TO PEE. I got called to podium, stood around for a second then Eric said go to staging we will do it later. So I boogied over the the B race which was already staged. I jumped into my row and got boo'd "You missed your call up! To the back!" Ok fine, fair enough, though I did miss it because I was racing and trying to podium as per protocol.
Zach, Ty and I made up the sole guys in the last row of a field of about 35. At the whistle I put in an ok sprint but didnt gain too much around the outside. As normal the front of the race was gone. Lucky I was warmed up. I was at least 26 back down the switchbacks on lap 1:
My first lap was a bunch of passing but pretty limited by people in front of me. My second lap was my fastest of the day at 7:42 and I passed a LOT more people. Either lap 2 or 3 I caught Pearl and was told by a spectator I was in 7th. WOAH. and then the legs began to wither, and pearl rode away...
Over the rest of the race I was around
@jShort, zach and nelson. I was yelling at nelson that he better attack and drop me. Come to think of it I was yelling a lot at everyone. Good things, or motivational things?
Last lap with Nelson we switched off a couple times. I attacked up the pavement climb and popped then we came back around. Going down the back field he said "you better sprint me!" I had already tapped out and decided I wouldn't contend him again. I had another hour ahead of me after all, but now I
had to. Up the final climb I kicked it, came around got in 5 cranks and TOTALLY popped. I popped so hard I shifted into the granny gear and started laughing at myself. We were both kicked but stayed on it all the way to the line which was the most pain I had all day. 10th in race #2!
Again directly to water and M&M's then the line. Joe announces "Matt Tyler is staging for his 3rd race of the day!" and I think "What the hell is wrong with me?" At the whistle I kinda slow rolled off the back and give tried to stay out of the way. I dusted off myself and put my arms up through the S/F It wasn't long before I was all alone hat first lap. But something weird happened, I closed in on Andrew that last lap. I sprinted at the line and passed him! (Turns out he rolled a tire)
I had a smile the entire race. Every muscle in my body was cramping. I went fast when I could but was actually struggling to keep from cramping everywhere. My left arm might have been the worst of all things. I wasn't lapped until 30 minutes when the Murphy Bro's, Rodger and Willis finally came around. There were huge gaps and I gave everyone cheers and heckles for not lapping me sooner.
I finished down 2 laps at right around an hour. I did 17 laps totaling ~32 miles/2900' of elevation. (not including 2.5 warm up laps). I've never felt so cracked on a bike.
I won the triple crown against only myself. I didn't walk a single hill in 3 races and had a pretty damn good time.
I may be biased since I live up the street from Marty's but I think this race has a pretty awesome atmosphere.
The biggest news is LDBCX ended up sweeping the SS podium!!
After 3 hours of racing I stuck around for a couple hours of course tear down. The light got pretty amazing. I had to stop a few times to take in the view. That venue is pretty special this time of the year. No justice.
