Bummer, saw that patch of rust in your pics, was wondering,
but didn't imagine it was that bad.
Whatever you get to replace it, you need to use that headbadge.

well that sucks, glad that happened before you got too far
I agree with K-monkey, stick with an old steel bike and make sure you treat in the inside to prevent rust like that
there are lots of old Japanese frames out there, I suggest something a little nicer if you can splurge (Tange, Ishiwata, etc)

I thought about that... is there a moral dilemma putting a differently branded headbadge on a bike? Also, I already offered it to @Karate Monkey if he wants it. I can always buy another headbadge...
Personal decision.
For coolness factor, I would have no qualms re-purposing that badge.

Is that a steel frame? OCNJ is about a 75 minute drive... I need to talk to the wife about that one!
yes, it's likely a 1988, probably Tange as they used Ishiwata I think later
unfortunately the panasonic bike museum website has since closed, which was my go to place years ago for these bits.

It's the best of what I could find your area, if it were my size I'd pay $100 for it. Make sure it fits, 23", so like a large in today's world.
parts are probably lower Suntour as they were used in most entry mid level bikes at the time

here's a better pic from somewhere else, this looks to be a 23" also
it seems to be original with Shimano light action parts, decent stuff just below 105
also dig those Miami Vice inspired paint splatters, just awesomeness

and here a catalog page from 1986, for the model above, DX2000
probably the same frame just better parts, DB CM Tange with carbon steel fork

If there is rust, I would strip and paint. If no rust, polish the paint and see how it looks.

I picked up the Bottecchia today during my lunch break. The official model is a Bottecchia Campione Del Mondo 1966.

Looking at the rust I think I do need to strip it down and repaint.

Here are the general plans:
  • Convert to 700cc wheels (I have some) with 32mm cross tires
  • Shimano 105 brifters conversion
  • 2x10 crankset conversion (I know I will need to widen the rear frame)
  • Replace front fork with cheap Chinese carbon (maybe)
Are any of the breaks or shifters worth anything on this bike?

Most of the rest will be keep original and cleaned with steal wool and WD40!

I am totally going non threaded. It can be yours if you pay to ship it!
I certainly would pay shipping.
But I would hold on to that stem just in case. When I was working on my POSS, the steerer was 1 inch instead of the 1 1/8" that we are used to. Find all your parts first b4 you give that away. I am in no rush either :)

Let me know when you are ready to part with it.

Thanks!
