Shooting the GAP ...

I’d like to do this trip probably in the spring. Is the route easy to follow? Are there camp grounds along the way?

Yes to both. The hardest part about the route is the end points. The C&O ends in Georgetown in DC, which isn't hard to find, but you can't park there so you have to navigate to the trail from wherever you do park. And in Pittsburgh, the smile markers disappear int he city and you have to look for the signs instead. That's about the extent of the difficulty.

There are campgrounds all along the C&O. I think there are campgrounds along the GAP as well, but I didn't even look for them to be honest. You can purchase the guidebook from the GAP site for only $10. Very worth it - it comes with two complete maps and descriptions of what is available as far as food, shelter, and whatever else at each town along the way.
