Post-Sandy Volunteering

I know many of us are itch'ing to get back on the trails, as I see people posting rides, TM ideas, races, etc.. Most of us have been inconvenienced by Sandy, but the level of destruction around the coastlines of NJ and NY are very real. My friend went to volunteer at the Rockaway Beach, NY area Sunday and here is the post from his Facebook:

"I brought supplies to the Rockaways today. I was unprepared for the level of destruction there. The #1 need right now is for people to show up and dig out homes. Donations are great but they really need people power."

On Saturday we helped out a 90 year old lady in an apartment complex in NYC who had alzheimer's and dementia. She was in really bad shape in terms of food and we were able to do some cooking for her as well as set her up with a neighbor who will take care of her. We helped out other families and elderly in the apartment complex as well.

-------------------------------------------

There are opportunities to lend a hand out there. Most of the donation centers will take volunteers to help sort through donations and make deliveries. I'll keep this post updated with ideas and links. If you have any info, post up and I will update this post. I think hearing stories about people's volunteer work would be encouraging as well.

Great post Jimmy.

I rode through Little Ferry and Moonachie on Saturday and the destruction is beyond words. I could only pass through because it was too much to take in. Since RP schools are still out Kayla and some of her fellow teachers spent some time in Little Ferry today helping to feed and bring coffee to volunteers. She said the folks were super appreciative.

She met the guy in this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-CBdEb7FXiw We all can help out in some way, every little bit helps.

Donations

I must admit it is devastating, my wife was just showing me photos of some of Seaside and a few other shore towns. There are no words to explain the destruction. I am very thankful to even have power. I also have some items to donate mainly for toddlers, Ie a Crib Boys toddler firetruck bed and Mattress so if anyone knows of someone in need let me know

Thanks

Joe

Just back online now here in Shark River Hills. We're top of the Hills. Spencer the Kalmyk was right on the water and lost everything. Anything we can do for you or your family let us know!

Wanted to get out to do some volunteer work before the storm hit, so set out in the morning to Brooklyn with a sack full of canned food and whatever I could grab from the house. Spent the day shuttling volunteers to different hubs and picking up donations to bring back to the hubs. Large freight trucks were coming in today with donations from all over. Was hoping to make a delivery to Far Rockaway, but coastal routes were being closed due to the storm. Crossing the GWB on the way back was pretty nuts with wind, snow - everything beyond the bridge was just white fog/snow/swirling mixture. Will try to get out again after storm.

I am probably going somewhere to help this weekend or if anyone needs desperate help in this community please post up too

Headed out to Little Ferry with Mr.Chainsaw. We didn't have any specific plans except to start at the church seen in the video that ChrisRU posted. As luck would have it they had a donation pickup/dropoff center setup at the church gym. We dropped off our donations and helped organize the place. They are mostly in need of cleaning supplies and non-perishable food. They don't need clothing - in fact, most donation centers are saying to skip the clothing.

Things have been cleaned up a lot since Monday. You could hardly tell there was flooding there. If you drove near the river, you could see some people cleaning up their house and drying out stuff. If we had more time, we would have stopped by the houses that had doors and garages open to see if they needed help cleaning. I was actually expecting to see more people cleaning up their houses. I guess either they are already done gutting their homes, or I suspect they are all at work and perhaps this weekend will be a big cleaning weekend.

Here's some photos of my Queens church helping out at Howard Beach last weekend. Tomorrow and Monday, they will go out to Long Beach, NY to help. I will be going to a different thing tomorrow, but if you're interested in Long Beach, PM me and I will try to get you in touch with the right peoples.

People are still gutting homes. They seem to be waiting till the weekend, probably because they need to work during the week. Tomorrow might be a good day to go out and help, since it's Veteren's day.

I might go out to Long Beach, NY tomorrow morning. Let me know if you're interested.

Is anyone still listening? Lol.

Took advantage of Veteran's day to get out with members of my church to Island Park, NY. The community isn't on the oceanfront, but they still got 6ft of water and pretty much every house needed/needs to be gutted. We joined the volunteer groups managed under Samaritan's Purse and Convoy of Hope. Convoy sent 38 semi's and 1.5 million pounds of supplies to the area:

While other large org's is still in the info collecting faze, these guys have their act together. We went to work right away. The house we were assigned to had plaster walls instead of dry wall, so demo was like 5x harder. If you like driving sledge hammers through walls, you will love volunteering at Island Park.
