Watching reactions on youtube and the overwhelming opinion for the seemingly knowledgeable (riders and ex-riders) is that the DQ was a terrible over reaction.

There's basically two questions - did he fail to keep his line? And did he elbow?

did he elbow? Almost everyone agreed that the elbow was caused by getting hooked by cavs bars and/or a reaction to maintain balance. And seems unanimous that the elbow didn't cause the fall as he was already going down.

did he fail to keep his line?
Opinion seems to be split here. Some seem to think THAT was the wrong Sagan committed here (that he was too aggressive in taking cav off the line). Others seem to think "that's sprinting" and that his move was no worse than you see all the time.

Regardless, again, all seem to think the DQ was ridiculous. Apparently taking an over aggressive line (ie, the only thing he MIGHT be guilty of) is a punishable (eg, points) but not a DQ worthy offense while elbowing an opponent to the ground is clearly DQ worthy (but NO ONE thinks the elbow caused cav to fall).

So basically the riders and ex riders all seem to be scratching their heads about this decision

What almost I missing that aso wants the best person in cycling gone?

Did they want him gone from the start, no. But I think their overreaction did have ulterior motives.... And this is why ( IMO).

1) ASO and Dimention Data have a significant ongoing Business relationship to totally revamp the user experience in particular the mobile and streaming aspects. In a moment on panic and anger they had an emotional reaction not a rational one.

2) Merckx. The story line for a while has been the chase for number 1. For a while it's been a forgone conclusion.... But time is catching up to Cav. He still has a great kick, but it's duration is getting shorter and shorter. It takes a lot of time and money to pull off the media campaign around the chase. They can still use it IF he's in the race... Now? That's a lot of sleepless nights in preparation. They're going to have to re-craft the storyline throughout the tour now..... Poof, gone. Zero return on investment.

With younger stronger guys out there the concept of a lead out train bringing the sprinter to 100m is no longer the norm. No one knows this more than Cav, it's why (I believe) he's been taking more and more risks the last few years.

We've all been watching Cav for a long time now. He's always been all or nothing. If the lead out was bad or he wasn't sure he'd win he'd pull up.... It was annoying actually. Now? He's involved in more crashes then any of the other sprinters.

He's under a ton of pressure and it's make him desperate and spitful to the point of being wreck-less. Do we not remember the Olympic track incident? Now THAT was egregious.

Wise strategy to keep the name and sponsors relevant during the remainder of the tour. Honestly they're probably getting more publicity now than if he wasn't DQ'd.
