too small for me, but can the dropouts be changed to a geared bike?

Yes. I bought a brand new one off eBay for $20. I think they retail for like $30. Just need to buy the drive side as the non-drive side is the same. The alternator plates are so versatile, there's options for racks, etc.

I keep the plate with the derailleur hanger with the derailleur on it with the cable/housing all the way to the shifter. It takes just a few minutes to swap from SS to geared and back. To keep it even cleaner I used a stick-on housing tab on the rear chainstay, only spot where I can't really attach the cable to the existing ones on the frame.

$600 is a good price. The matching anodizing on the hubs/seatpost-clamp/grips is REALLY nice.
