Finger Lakes / Shindagin

Hey Folks,

I'm heading up to the finger lakes Aug 14-18 for some college tours/family time at Seneca Lake...

I'm hoping to get at least one ride in while we are up there and have done some prelim scouting of Shindagin Hollow State Forest...

I found these two links which has some decent info...

http://www.shindagin.com/
http://www.cycle-cny.com/shindagin-hollow-state-forest/

It sounds like it's a great spot for riding...was wondering if anyone on the board here had any first hand knowledge for anything along these lines:
  • tips for parking
  • trails to not miss (or to avoid)
  • terrain type in general (i'm debating between my 29er or my Fatbike)
  • etc...
thanks in advance! Joe C

I'm from Ithaca, Shindagin is by far the best place to ride up there. I go every time I visit my folks. Pretty sure this is the most up to date map:

I usually park at the northern end of Braley Hill Road. It's hard to go wrong there, everything is great in both directions. It's very flowy with some log overs and rooty sections but very few technical/rocky parts. Blue is more tech than yellow or red. You'd be fine on either bike.

R1 to R2 going south is not to be missed
B2 down to Shindagin Hollow Road is enduro style with lots of jumps
B4 is an IMBA build, awesome
Bikes are not allowed on Finger Lakes Trail (FLT)
The only trail I don't know is B5, never managed to find the trailhead

Enjoy!

I have a group of friends who go up every year that pound the pavement. From what they say its got endless miles of quality road riding if thats an option.

I was up there last week, but unfortunately spent all my time on the road bike. There are some very good road climbs up there!

Never been to FL nat forest but my impression is there are not a lot of bike legal miles there. Could be wrong. If it's close probably worth a look. The other place is Hammond Hill but I only been there once. The locals I know up there ride Shindagin 90% of the time.

I might be heading up to Seneca Lake in a few weeks. Is Shindagin still the go-to place? I was also thinking of maybe doing some DH at Greek Peak.
