Anyone shimming a carbon frame to run a dropper post?

I have a 34.9 diameter frame looking to run a 31.6 dropper. Internet research has mixed reviews.

I've run a shim on an aluminum bike before to make a 30.9 Reverb fit a 31.6. I didn't like the idea because of the small amount of contact area, so I bought two shims and ground off the lip on the second one to install at the bottom of the dropper in addition to the shim at the top for extra surface area/support. Optimally, I would stay away from shims.
