Anyone ever take the auto train from DC to Florida?

My niece is heading back to school in Florida and over this summer she started leasing a new car, the car is going down to tampa with her so in an effort to save herself 1100 or so miles on the lease she will be taking the auto train.

Anyone have any tips or special info that I can pass on to her to help it go as smoothly as possible? Thanks for any help.

Yeah. Compare the price of overrunning the lease by 1100 miles to shipping a car and buying a ticket on that train. Find someone to split gas and driving and drive themselves down without stopping at a hotel. 20 hours to Tampa.

And the auto train is dc->Orlando so make that 800 miles of driving

The ticket is $250(might be less for student). Car is $200

At $0.30/mi over that is a savings of $240 off lease. Add in gas of $100(high guess)

Now if it wasn't a money issue, it's a nice way to travel. Although 20 hours in a coach seat could suck.

So this isn't really a financial decision. My 80yo aunt has been using it for 15 years. Lives in Sarasota area. Loves it.
She uses the bar car. No doubt the whole trip.

No, not a financial issues at all, just a 20 year old kid taking the auto train for the first time. Looking for do's/don'ts pros/cons, etc.

Hopefully your aunt will log on today and see this post and offer some insight.

Hey Walt we took it for the first time last month. For us it was train vs flying and renting a car vs driving the whole way. Basically worked out to similar cost to flying and renting. It's about as 3.5 hr drive to the station in Lorton VA. They provide dinner and breakfast on the ride. Dinner choices are 5, 7 or 9 pm, but unless you check in really early, 7 will be gone. Food is like on an airline. They load your car on and the train leaves at 4 pm, you get up the next morning and you're in florida. Gets to Sanford FL at 9am. The seating choices are coach (just a seat), a private roomette or a slightly bigger bedroom with bathroom/shower. The bathroom is tiny like an airline but it's nice having a private room and fold down bed. Don't know what Pat's talking about re: bar car seating - I guess you could sit there all night but they are just bench seats at tables like a diner - not comfortable. Also take into account you are saving a hotel room (for us on a round trip both ways) - it's foolish to try to drive in one shot. One last thing, price varies depending on when you leave, you get a better deal calling rather than booking on line.

Bottom line we thought it was great, had our own vehicle packed with crap (and bikes!). As we will be moving to FL next year we'll use it again. Only negative is the meals they sit 4 people together so you are likely to be seated with a couple of gabby geezers!
