Day 28 - Summer hours at work, looking to beat the coming flood (they really were calling for flooding here), but even now at 8:15, no rain yet. But I don't mind - I actually got to ride off-road for the first time in like a week and I got out of work early, so ... yea, Friday! Only one downside - the recent rains here have had a deleterious effect on the Wiss. There are a bunch of downed trees (including one massive one right at the start of the last pitch off the Rex Ave climb) and a lot of gullies and erosion in a few sections. Those stupid-ass water bars in the Houston Meadow are becoming steps (why the hell they ever put water bars there in the first place I'll never understand) and everything is overgrown. I have feeling that between the loose schist and some of the roots being exposed due to runoff, there may be a bunch of trees falling int he park later this year.

And yet even with all of that, still a great place to ride!

The meadow grass is up to your shoulder in some areas right now ...

This little guy waddled all along the lower trail looking for a place to cut through to get to the water. I pointed it out to him when I saw it and he ran right past me to jump in the creek ...

@1speed - you are making this pretty damn hard for me. I am going into this weekend down 2:42 on you and I have the kids all weekend while you, well, you have cats.

I also have to be well rested for Game of Thrones Sunday night ...

Seriously, I'm focused on the miles. If I were faster, I'd be (very) happily lagging behind on hours. I'm looking for a thousand miles this month and I think that's going to happen at this point - I'm at 926 now. Time wise, if Sunday works out the way I'm planning (tomorrow should be a soaking wet mess around here) I may have a shot at 80 hours on the month, so if I know the thousand is reachable and Sunday is a nice day, I may get a bunch of hours and leave myself with only one or two to reach 80 on Monday.

Unfortunately I had to drop out of this with just a few days remaining. I had a sort of family emergency come up and left me traveling without a bike for a day.

I thought I might've had to drop out sooner due a vacation, but that never materialized.

It was great motivation to get out and ride daily. Thanks to @jdog at Halter's for sponsoring this!

Good luck to all still participating!

Day 29

I woke up at 6:00, then went downstairs with my phone and my book to make something to drink and have some toast. This book that I carry downstairs - as useful to me as an electron microscope at that time of day. I guess it's out of habit.

I did not get rained on today. My left hamstring is tight, which makes the end of the ride harder than it needs to be. I admit I need some rest, but I'm too close to last year's total to dial back now.

July Challenge Day 29: Somehow I missed all the rain, then I saw Stacey right before I got home

34.2 miles

Overall

Time: 69:26
Last year's total: 72:28
Days remaining: 2
Hours to last year's total: 3:02

Nothing says "AMERICA, FUCK YEAH!" like painting a cow red, white, & blue and sticking an ICBM in your yard.

Day 29 - way too windy for July today ... why is it that no matter which way you turn, sometimes it just feels like the wind is right on you? Boo, wind!

No much to say about today's ride except that the weather was better than I expected. I thought it was supposed to be pouring today. Nope - just wind. I think I'd have preferred the pouring at a few points during the ride - like when I came over the top of a hill and the wind just hit me in the face and stood me up ... in case it isn't clear, I don't like wind.

Anyway ... more l'il horses!!!

These are not the same l'il horses I took a picture of last week ... these are different l'il horses. Apparently, l'il horses are a thing around here ...

I wore my foot condoms today in anticipation of rain/wet roads ... turns out I did not need them, but they look pro so ... there's that.

Day 30

Yesterday we went to the park and threw the aerobie for a while. I woke up this morning feeling like I had been dropped out of a 3rd floor window. This morning was just trying to spin out some of the soreness that I woke up with.

Then I smelled bacon. It smelled good.

July Challenge Day 30: I passed a house making bacon this morning and it made me a little sad that I wasn't eating bacon

Last year's total: 72:28
Days remaining: 1
Hours to last year's total: 1:51

I am looking forward to riding more "normally", whatever that means. I am also looking forward to spending time on the MTB again.

Day 30 - Had a plan, didn't work out. I was looking to do about 7 hours today so all I would need to hit 80 on the month would be the mandatory 1 hour tomorrow, but my free hub had other plans: it came apart after about 25 miles. The wheel was shaking so bad on the trail that I had to bail to Forbidden Drive and ride home on the roads. Even then, it was grinding the whole way home and felt really loose and sloppy, kind of like when a tire starts going soft. I was surprised it held together for the ride home. Oh well - so unless I feel like doing 4 more hours tomorrow (and I won't) I guess 80 isn't going to happen. That's fine - I got my thousand miles for the month as of today so I did hit my main goal.

Total time: 4:03:55
Total miles: 48

35464900763_4570aa8149_b.jpg

The first sign of trouble - the wheel started making noise, so I pulled into the picnic area off Bell's Mill Rd to check it out and that's when I noticed it was loosening up a bit. It got much worse a few miles later.
