Chapter Lead: Deer Park
JORBA.ORG
Team MTBNJ Halter's
Tis the season.

And a bit late

As it usually starts this week.

Can it be simple like 1 point per hour and done.

No gimmes or tricks just 1 point per hour

I need something here just because.

I'm with ya brother!

I, too, need the motivation provided by the competition.

And I agree; simple is best. All bikes, all surfaces, valued equally. Points are earned for riding when it would be much easier to hang inside, protected from the elements.

Didn't fidodie start the discussion in October or November? I'm almost positive I saw something out there for this year...search is failing me.

If none of marshals of past years want to do it I'll volunteer. @fidodie @clarkenstein?

only points for whole hours? Or can a homie rack up 1.125 points on a day?
Does trainer time count?

I think the cold weather and suffer bonus points are actually a positive. After all the purpose is to get people riding and challenge them. A simple hour here and there allows the person with the most free time to excel.

I would propose this:

Minimum ride time of 1 hour
1 point per completed hour, this is motivation to stay out a little longer to complete that second or third hour etc.
3 cats, self chosen. So the people with the most free time have to put themselves in that cat.

Open class, these homies need to
Make the time.

Maybe a weekly challenge for bonus points, like the physical challenge on double dare.

Proof of Jorba membership gets you two bonus points for one week??!?!?!

In theory, but the people with the most free time will also be able to capitalize the highest on any bonus days so it's really a wash. A guy like myself could wait for a rainy, freezing, bonus day and put in 12-hours and wipe out the competition.

Bonus days should be randomly determined at the end of each month, that way the incentive is to ride as much as possible each month and hope you rode that day they pick. That makes the bonus day truly a bonus

This is a good idea, bonus days can be pulled from a winning lottery number or something like that.

This isn't "base training" - it's just freaking riding... If there's one thing the July 31 day challenge taught me, it's that riding for hours sucks ballz... and not very productive as actual training - I ended that month pretty much fried since I could never recover properly... Past experience has proven to me that if I want to get the most out of winter training, I need to do it indoors and under controlled conditions where I can get maximum benefit for the least amount of time. I'll do some mtn bike rides when time and conditions permit, but otherwise, I'm not wasting my time and wrecking my gear again for another contest. Until July.... maybe...

OMG, I said I would not open but fuck, I am here.

I will say this once, the first year of BIYF, which had a few overly dumb rules, was the best. Some kind of system that gets you extra points for getting out in the rain or snow is the real motivator and it gives the people that dont have a bizillion hours a free time a fighting chance. An hours based system is simply who has the most time to ride there bike.

This is a good idea.

I am a proponent for 3 points max in a given day. In general, a guy who rides 5 days a week, 1 hour a day, will get 5-7, or maybe 10, points that week. When you set it up in a way that people can drop 12 in 1 day, you lose half the field in the first week.

I think that forcing people to enter the ride in a spreadsheet is Contest Suicide.

I also think the rules need to be firm. If you ride 3.5 hours you don't get the 5 hour bonus.

Any contest where driving your car more than you ride your bike is going to not be in the spirit of riding your bike. Nobody should get bonus points for living on a park. Nobody should be penalized because they live 40 miles from a park (I know, this is NJ, just making a point).

Ok, I'm going to Kevin's house now and we're going to hang out and play chess and not open this tread for the rest of the day.

Is there any merit to a Jim Vs the field element to the contest? The main contest goes on as normal, but in order to keep Jim (and maybe some others) directly involved we add a percentage of Jim's numbers. If the leader is at or above an agreed upon percentage of Jim's points, he/she wins. If below, Jim wins. Just trying to find a way to include the uber riders and give them an opportunity to compete.

I think all things being equal, Lionger usually has more hours than any human on the planet to ride. It's just a matter of waking him up from his coma once winter arrives.
