i ran 11/42 on a 1x w/o problem.
also on a 3x, and it couldn't cross chain big-big, but who does that? (it could, but then it couldn't use the small-smallish because it couldn't collect the chain.

To work with Shimano, you may need a goatlink or longer B screw.
I think SRAM compatible as is.
