Rear derailleur jumping

On my trek I have been having a problem with my rear derailleur shifting rough. It shifts through all the gears fine, and sits on the cog correctly, but when i shift up (say from 1 -2) it is really rough. What could be causing this?

There are at least 12 things that could be causing it.

First things first. If your drive-train is full of dirt and muck, clean it.
